Item drops are almost completely random in the game. If you want to find more unique and set items, then wear equipment that gives you a bonus to finding magic items.

The higher difficulty levels are for high level characters only. Once you beat the game in mercenary, you can play veteran, and then once you beat veteran, you can play elite.

That's right.

slightly different question, but related to the topic of finding magical items...

does the chance to find a magical item only affect drops from having killed a monster or both from monsters and containers?

one more question: is the chance to find magical items cummulutive from all of your party members?

The chance to find magic items is cumulative. It might affect those fancy chests, but regular chests and barrels and so forth will drop junk regardless.

I'm wondering if the chance to encounter a bone fiend in a barrel is based on Magic Find.
Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly goes right down to the bone
