When I left the cave dialog boxes appeared above the characters and a box appeared in the lower L/H screen. The lower box listed the char. in order and each name was followed by the statement " xxx has entered the xxx jungle."
This lower box also had an active cursor. I known the cursor was active because keyboard control was lost. Stroking a hot key yielded a key stroke in the section with the cursor. Using the mouse to point and click I reached a teleporter and things returned to normal upon return to town. So what happened and what can be done to return things to normal other than teleportation. Or is this a feature that someone failed to document in the manual???
It sounds like you went into chat mode. You can use this, for example, to type in chants at shrines. Pressing enter (and probably escape) should get you out.
