Is there any way to go back to a slightly earlier save, or to hak a lost item back into my current save?
I was exploring Aman'lu for the first time today. I spoke to the woman about her grandfather's staff, found the Rainbow Trinket, and gave it to her to fix the staff. She gave me a very nice unique ring that had big bonus percentages for gold and finding magic items. Since that was the completion of the quest, I opted for the auto-save, and all was good.
It appears that the auto-save was right when the dialogue finished, and the ring was on the floor. Stupid me picked up the ring and then closed the game without another save, thinking the auto-save had me covered. Well, when I continued my most recent saved game I noticed that the ring was missing, and the quest is marked as complete.
Is there any way to fix this without starting over, or waiting until I play through again as a Veteran?
Is there any way to....
There are always the backup saves, but the issue with that is that if you saved more than twice, it's a bust. I don't know any other way, but try it with back ups, it may be ok.
And He whispered to me in the darkness as we lay together, Tell Me where to touch you so that I can drive you insane; tell Me where to touch you to give you ultimate pleasure, tell Me where to touch you so that we will truly own each other. And I kissed Him softly and whispered back, Touch my mind.
save files
go to my computer
open up C drive
go to my games
Dungeon siege folder should be there
open it and go to save folder
next, right click and copy the character folder you wish to save.
Paste the copied folder somewhere that you may find it easily, such as desktop.
This way you have a starting point in which to have in case you mess up somehow. theres no way of recovering your previous save that i know of, but this is a sure way to keep a good save you wish to keep on hand
* when and if you do mess up, simple copy folder you saved on desktop and paste it over the same file, in your character save file where you originally found it.

Ok the post above is not what I meant although it is a good piece of advice.
When you go to the save folder there are two types of files for each character - name.ds2party
name.ds2party.bak
name.ds2radar
name.ds2radar.bak
The .bak are the back ups I mentioned. You simply rename them, ie removing the .bak file, they will overwrite the other two (which you will previously save somewhere else just to be sure) and then give it a go.

Before posting this question I tried to locate a Save file and failed. I chalked it up to not knowing where to look. Well, it seems that there is no Save file for DS2 on my system. Not sure how that is possible, since it obviously saves the game somewhere.
I open my C: Drive,
then the Program Files folder,
then the Microsoft Games folder,
then the Dungeon Siege 2 folder,
and in that folder are 4 other folders: dev, maps, Resources, system
the System folder has 9 folders: 1028, 1031, 1033, 1036, 1040, 1041, 1042, 3082, mss
None of those folders contain anything resembling save files, ds2party or ds2radar.
Thanks for attempting to help me on this. I am still curious how to resolve this issue, in case I have trouble in the future, but for now I have started another game.

Of course it's possible, they are always in the same place, I regularly back them up:
C:\Documents and Settings\(Name)\My Documents\My Games\Dungeon Siege 2\Save\SinglePlayer\(Name)
They are there, and they do not move. There are issues with saved games when you try to load one that was made with a mod or something like that but there is a way around them too, and they are always in the folder, just may not show up in the game itself.
