GAAAAAAAH (??? quest)

Post by VampirePenguin »

ok, I am frustrated now.

I *finally* got that &%#$#%$# "???" killed, got the stone, and proceeded to do the mystery quest. I gank all the lvl 62 prarie dogs. I almost get my but whipped by the first "evil npc", so after finally killing it, I town portal back to load up on health potions and better characters. I get back in the cave, kill all the evil ones (including Drevin) and finally start breathing normal again. Happy part of the quest coming up right? Hunt the wumpus, pillow fights, etc. In short......... JOYGASM!!

But when I get to the door at the end of the "evil NPC cave" I click on it and......

"This door seems to be mysteriously linked to nearby creatures"

That's when I started pulling my hair out. I checked the ENTIRE cave system to be sure there were no baddies left. Still no luck. Then I equipped the set items, but no joy. So I portal out and back in. STILL no good.

Any ideas??????

Hi Vamp
congrats on getting there!!
Just a hint without giving too much away :

1) look carefully at what's on the floor in front of the screen and think about equipping people with what you see
2) you'll need to chant something and the characteristics of the set items may give you a clue

Otherwise, look at the walkthrough explanation on this site and you'll find the chant you need.

Enjoy!

It seems as though leaving the area for any reason is bad. The first time I went into the Mysterious Cave, I got my party killed, and when I came back I couldn't get that door to open either. Fortunately, the cave seems to reset. I went back after killing the final boss, and everything went back to the way it started.

Ok, I got it now. I had saved and quit. When I re-started the game, I went back. Everything had respawned. This time tho, I made sure to bring enough potions and the right NPCs. I made it through just fine. I just wasn't patient enough to wait for the "happy fluffy pillow".

For those who haven't made it through the cave yet, some advice....

Load up on potions. Even my healer couldn't keep up sometimes.

Bring a mixed bag of talents. Every one of the evil NPCs were resistant to something, more often 3 or 4 things. One was resistant to everything but ranged, one was resistant to all magic, lots were resistant to melee. I had 2 melees (one 2 handed and dual wield) ranged, combat mage and nature mage.

Most of the npcs were about the same levels as my party. Most were exercises in slugging it out.

Happy gaming,

Way to go on actually killing him!! I wish I could say I were having as much luck with that task. I've gotten him down to where he has no life showing on the bar, but still dives into the ground.

Did you have every chant and every quest item? Did you have the 3 mysterious set items in your inventory when you killed him?

Any further information would be appreciated. :)

Well, other posters said the forced the issue by carrying green-labeled items. So I started packing every "rare legendary" thing I could. All my party members have a ring that gives them +105% to find magic items, and I had 2 "mysterious buckets" equipped (yeah, my guys actually wore them), which boosted my chance even further. When the ??? popped out, I paused it, and then unloaded every special attack I had.

Thank you to all the posters with the good ideas.

Happy gaming,
Vamp

PS: I was clearing the horns out when the ??? popped out again, even after I had completed the mystery quest. Yarg! I be king o' the pirates now!

The night before last, I walked around with at least 4 rare items in each of my characters' inventories. After 5 hours of play, we had not seen the ??? creature once.

Last night, I decided having the rare items in my inventory all the time wasn't working...that as the walkthrough says, he has a chance of appearing when rare items or better are dropped, I took all of the rare items out of my inventory. We saw him twice. AND... We killed him!

The odd thing was, I didn't realize we killed him, because he still dove underground. And, I've gotten into the habbit of just quickly hitting "J" twice to open and close the journal whenever it's blinking, so it doesn't distract me. So, it wasn't until the next time I went back to town and was sitting around waiting for my wife to finish her shopping that I noticed the Mysterious Stone in the Quest Items tab.

So, it doesn't matter if you carry rare items around or not, only that you wear +% Find Magic. Also, we do not have all of the other Quest Items in our book completed, so that also is unimportant. We have yet to go under Kalrathia. It just comes down to having him show up and beating the crap out of him.

I know my wife used a power or two of hers available...and I used all 3 of mine. :)

My wife and I just played through the mysterious cave...and I do have to admit - I got my butt stomped into the ground. As if the prairie dogs weren't enough, the Evil companions royally whooped us.

We got very little as a reward for the quest - aside from a few unique items which really have no use or value. But, I'm glad I did it. I think everyone needs to see the pillow fight...and to know what it's like to be the poor creatures we beat up on using Mirror - 6 PC's beating on 1 little NPC. Interesting to see the tables turned. :)

Well, just a side-note.
If possible, you should concentrate all MF bonuses on one char to get a higher probability to find rare/unique/set items.
