First post, first questions...

Post by Csadar »

Okay I've been playing SoA for quite some times now and I want to start my ultimate game to get to ToB afterward. My PC's gonna be a druid (Shapeshifter or Totemic?Personnaly I'd prefer Shapeshifter but what do u think??) and I plan on assembling the following party :
-Csadar(me)
-Jaheira
-Imoen(she's my sis after all)
-Keldorn
-Viconia
(I'll use the hack to prevent a fight between those 2 if I have to)

But the problem is I dont know if I should use Jan or Valigar as my last guy...what do u think is best? Another mage/thief (and a great NPC too :P ) or a tank?

P.S Just wanted to say Hi to everyone since I just joined your forum :D

Csadar,

Welcome to the boards!

Warning: They are extremely addicting.

Onto your gaming questions...

You WILL need a fix to keep Viconia and Keldorn from dueling to the death. The script is the happy script and I'm not sure who the author is of the script although they post here often.

For your sixth member, I'd say go with Valygar. He'll be a great scout and once you have him dual wielding katanas, woe to all he sneaks up behind (I've never used Valygar for more than the planar sphere quest though). Imoen as your only mage will certainly be a challenge. Would you consider Aerie instead of Viconia. She'll move up the ranks slower than Viccy but you'll be impressed once you reach ToB. Plus, you've got a backup mage. Once again I get to state the immense usefulness of the cleric/mage. This option will also keep you away from the need of installing the happy scripts.

good luck.

I like having two mages, but my party is a little different. Vicky is the best cleric, but clerics are over-rated. I prefer Aerie since she's a mage/cleric. But to answer your question I'd go with a true tank, like Korgan. You need someone who can really take a pounding while the rest of your party dishes out spells and arrows. Keldorn is a good back up tank, but sometimes you need him to hold up and cast dispell magic.

Doc brings up a good point. You have no true 'tank'. Keldorn and Jaheira make good backup tanks but you really don't have anyone to really take on four enemies at once. This was another reason I was thinking of taking valygar over jan although I didn't write it. I believe your party will be fun to play and will certainly bring up interesting situations. Korgan makes the game too easy. If the number of enemies is overwhelming, just make korgan and mobile shield and get everyone to chase him. Your group will require a little more strategy and I think you should pursue it. I'd still take Aerie over Viconia, though.

Valygar can almost tank. He just lacks the heavy armor.
Him and my pc fighter used to hack everybody up.
Usually my pc took on one enmey 1 on 1.
Anomen and Valygar took on the toughest.
My mages kept their mages busy and unleashed an accasional magic missile or flame arrow and jan, well jan was just jan. :D

Anway for your party go with Valyagr and if you want, get rid of Jaheria and put in Jan to replace her.

And welcome Csadar
Have a good time.

viccy, if you get her the human flesh armor and amulet of 10% magic resist and shield of the lost is 100% resistant to magic! This beats keldie's 50% with holy avenger. give her a bunch of dispell magics and free action and she can back up your team from dominate and charm spells.

Give her crom and she is a very good tank. with the al important magic resist. str belt and regen ring, possibly gaxx, and she can take it and keep going. I think, possibly because I am a spell slinger myslef, in terms of magical tanking.

aerie is another great choice, check my signature, you have with tob exp cap, a total monster near 6 million or so. she is the best specialized demon/undead hunter in the game, far exceeding keldorn or anoweenie.
Think chain cont. implosions and storms of wrath.

can't go wrong with jaheira, think greater elemental summon, and whirlwinds. Also think SECOND ring of wizardry, part of loot in harper quest, and harper pin, both killer to mages. oh yeah, if you play druid, ONLY ring of wizardry!

good for aerie and imoen.

May I suggest jan if you have tob? At high levels you get spike traps, but no abu dazim and animate dead. load up on inv stalkers or m swords, and you'll be ok. Jan and imoen can eventually give you planetars, and those are too cool.

Interesting note, at very high levels keldorn can get summon deva, which is almost as good. both rock!

I am playing

sorc
viccy
jaheira
aerie
minsc and
yoshimo/imoen

In the process of getting into viccy's pants, but already getting cat fights between the girls.

Totemic or shapeshifter?

With Tob, the greater werewolf is pure killer. totemic really has some killer summons, tho. those summons can be the difference in the earlier stages, but once you get aerie or jan with planetars, they suffer in comparison.

thats no where near as good as almost any mage!
I'm testing wild mage kit, and I got the planatear who beat a dragon with no injuries!
Devas have a third of the spells and much less imunities/resistances then planatears!

Sefinately. morlock is right, planetars are bettetr by far than devas. but the fact is that keldorns ability is quite interesting. first, he gets a very limited spell selection, and unlike a mage, you get a set number of those abilities a day, and get it as a special ability. He is the only npc fighter to get a summon spell, and like jaheiras greater elemental transform, it does not use up a spell slot. There are such nice 7th level priest spells, that I actually find it an advantage for keddy to suppliment my summons even tho he is a warrior. this frees up my clerics for the also very important sunray spell, and lets not forget greater restoration which with tob heals whole party!

Silly me! And I thought Keldorn was there for no other purpose than to bash heads and soak blows! ;)

True. True. I guess in my own experience he just never seemed to hold the front as well as korgan, anomen, or a fighter type PC. I would send those guys into the fray against all odds. With Keldorn, I usually used him as a second line type because of the reach with carsomyr and so he could use his dispel and true sight abilities.

I do not like Keldorn that much. Still, equip him with Gauntlets of Dex, a Girdle of Strength and Carsomyr and he's absolutely one of the very best.
