Mulitplayer or Single? Please Help!!!

Okay, I was a huge Diablo 2 fan and DS2 seems very similar initially. I started off single player and really liked it. I got up to four party members and I realized it would be a lot more fun if I could play with my roomate. I imported my characters but realized I could no longer solo with 4 characters, just 3.

So I'm torn between playing strictly single player and having all my party members or playing strictly multiplayer but only having three party members (unless I play with my friends). Also, I noticed when I play online with my friend... if he doesn't have a warp point, I no longer have it and etc. So... anyone have any advice? I'd really appreciate it because I just want to play either single or muliplayer so I only have to level one set of characters.
