New to WoW, how does it compare?

Post by Ragin Cajun »

I'm just starting to look at these massive RPG games (I know, just a little behind the times).

Anyway, bought WoW yesterday, playing it on the 10 day free pass right now and I like it thusfar. I went back by Best Buy today to check a few things out and saw Guild Wars was pretty reasonably priced. I also noticed that the playing service was free. That's a bit of a concern since you normally "get what you pay for". However, since I travel extensively with my job and am not sure how much time I'll have to play, I was liking the "free" think over $14/mo when I may not be able to play enough to get my money's worth in WoW. Has anyone played GW and what do you think about it?

Thanks!

Well this forum is about WoW, not GW.

I'd just like to add that if you play GW, you have to buy the expansions to be able to play. Different then a monthly payment, not sure what they cost though.
Never played GW myself.

Sorry Rob, I thought I mentioned in the post that I was currently playing WoW and was just looking for a little insight. I've reposted in the General MMORPG thread if you want to close this one.

A clarification

My understanding about guildwars is that each module can be played alone, but the are opportunities for cross content quests.

If you are looking for alternatives that do not have monthly subscriptions, I would look at Titan Quest.

Ummm, Titan's Quest??? When did that become an MMORPG? Well, welcome to WoW, I've been playing it since November, my first MMORPG, so no way to compare to Everquest, etc, but I find it a fascinating and compelling world.

Lets put is this way with wow's patching from 2.0 foward has alot of people in an uproar alot have been leaving since alot of the classes are being nerfed (non playable) an example would be alot of the (mage/warlock) are mainly too over powered like considering some of my friends on wow can flat out take down a 12k hp paladin in about 2-3 shots because pala's were nerfed along way back since only healing an holy are worth playing retro is too nerfed. Anyway it's only getting worse it seems to me an alot of other people liked it when the game was still running in pre-expan 2.0 the game was alot more fun they removed the ranking system from pvp so now pvp is just like earning money in the game, as well as alot of other things like enchanting since when you hit level 70 now alot of the good enchantments in that past that you had too pay out 200-300 gold there effects have been reduced there are some people that have just been hitting level 69 an holding off by making new characters in the long run you can look at it this way.

World of Warcraft - $19.99 USD
World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade - $39.99 USD
Monthly Fee - $14.99 USD - One Month Recurring, $41.97 USD - Three Months Recurring ($13.99 per month), $77.94 USD - Six Months Recurring ($12.99 per month), or Per-paid Gametime Card - $39.99 USD.
12 Months Fee Spent - On a $14.99 USD Fee $179.88 (W/O Tax)

Some people can play in moderation like only 2-3 hours a day while others play for 15-24 hours a day. I have a friend whos been out of work for 4 months playing this game non stop an doing nothing else but eat, sleep, and drink wow. For me I spent roughly $105.00 getting everything needed to play World of Warcraft best thing to do is get a 10-day trial an see what you think though you can only goto Lv. 20, can't trade, use ah (auction house), use mailing system, and can only have 10 gold max. If you know where to train at you can get too Lv. 20 in 1 day or less, Lv. 40 in about 2-3 Days, and Lv. 60 in about 4-5 days time then Lv. 70 if you have expan in another 2 days time. This is if you played 8-15 hours a day at least 1 Game Day is about 5 RL days so it'd take you a few months to get to Lv. 60 where as some people it takes 15 to 30 Game Days.

It's up too you what you want too do but personlly to me it's not worth it.
hmm...
Spoiler
if you're reding this you have no life.

A little informal poll among my friends...
Its a time sucker.....look up and hours gone...plus the cost...
almost all of them have quit playing, for various reasons..
Myself, it just doesn't appeal to me, my personal opinion.

If it ain't fun for you, then definitely don't do it. Too many people will become involved in an MMO and get caught up in the slave syndrome, whereby they don't have fun at all, grumble and gripe about the monthly fee, the way the game is handled, etc...yet still keep right on paying and playing. Myself, WoW is still fun, I don't mind the modest monthly fee (it's cheaper than many other forms of entertainment), and since it's my time we're talking about here, I'm free to spend it how I wish. ;)

Uhm...you don't have to buy the expansions to play... First, they really aren't expansions persay. They are more like different actual games, and you can buy any of them without having to buy the original. But, you are right to worry about what you're getting. World of Warcraft is more in-depth. The only thing i really hated about Guild Wars is that all the outside zones are instanced, meaning that you are alone, unless you made a party in town.

I played both GW and WoW

GW was a very pretty game,it's like living in a pretty picture, but is smaller in the overall map size. WoW has a more cartoon look, but outlands add-on is very Sci-fi looking, like Planetside from SOE. The GW charactors seem smaller too, the moving of the charactors is not as easy as wow, but you can get used to it quickly, more of a point and click style, then they walk to that spot. You can adjust WoW to do that in options,if you want to try that style of movement. The WoW community that lived in lookingforgroup chat ,that was nerfed ,moved to Trade chat in the cities. Of course Barrens chat is there for the horde. I don't play GW anymore ,I play WWllonline on tuesday shutdowns of wow. They have a 2 week trial until 2008 sometime.
