What happens afterwards is really 200 years of the SIth rebuilding, the Republic Re-stabilizing and and spreading it's borders into the outer rim areas. The next true war isn't until the Dark Underlord leads the SIth into a long war against the Republic and then Kaan Finishes it where Bane destroys the old Sith and Brings the rule of two to power.

Both, really.
But, to be honest, who *doesn't* want to know... absolutely and for certain, assumptions aside... what happened to Revan? Carth? Bastilla? And what of the Exile and the ones he/she traveled with (though it is kinda safe to assume on those...)?
I'm sure there'll be a prequel, considering how well the series has done so far. But, come on... I want KOTOR III to solve some questions, darnitt all!

What the female Revan really thinks when Carth says his little catchphrase...

I want a sequel, because I've just gotta find out what happens to revan, exile, true sith, you name it. But the history stated through out one and two leaves so many open doors for prequel's. you could visit the mandalorian wars, Exar Kun's life, maybe be part of the ancient sith like Ajunta pall or Marko Ragnos (i'd love to be part of that!)
Hindsight is 20/20.

The reason I love the KOTOR series is that its an open-ended game, pretty much differente ach time you play it. For example, on one play through I know what happened to Bastilla - I killed her. But on another play through she'll stay alive... I would rather have the option of deciding for myself what "really happened".

with the job Obsidian did on K2s ending the obvious answer is SEQUEL
now if this KOTOR 3 ever comes out I hope they have a Sequel and then maybe a RPG set prior to or during the Mandalorian/Jedi Civil War that would be cool following Revan or the Council, even though we know what happens or we can just player after KOTOR 3

why not both
What I think should happen is that they should continue the story where it left off, and during the journey there are flashbacks our character experiences, when someone brings our past up or something, and instead of a lengthy dialogue we play out the event in discussion and make some alignment decisions that way.

sequel definately!! Uhh unknown regions of space to travel, that opens up;
new planets
new creatures
ties up revan and exile fates
new mini games possibly, like dejarik! kreia talked so much about it but never played.
maybe dont fight sith fighters all the time, but shoot like asteroids for small in between travel fights.
of course new missions
of course new characters.
besides prequel wouldnt be fun, because you already know what happens, and you wouldnt really be able to make decisions to change the outcome of the game, because it has to end with mandalorians losing and republic winning.
