KOTOR III Rumor News Thread, Part Two

With that out of the way...yes and no, Buck. No, because the first MMO I played was Star Wars Galaxies, so Star Wars is what drew me into that sort of gaming. Having also played both KOTORs, I can't think of any better medium for a Star Wars-themed MMORPG.
At the same time, yes, I am disappointed. I realize that contradicts my statement above. I am ambivalent on this matter because like yourself and others who frequent GB, I first started gaming back when personal computers emerged on the public scene. Some of the finest story-telling and atmosphere is delivered by the single-player (and even multi-player) experience, as the previous two KOTORs and other games demonstrate.
Yet, an MMO has it's own strong points. Therefore I am actually quite excited by the prospect of a KOTOR MMORPG.

Rumors!
Folks,
I haven't been on recently because there hasn't been anything new, but I have great news for all considered.
The first and best news is as follows (and I'll copy straight from the source)
We've been informed by a bloke down the pub, otherwise known as an anonymous source, that Lucas Arts are planning to unleash some tasty news about the next Star Wars title, at the 30th anniversary celebration event of the much loved set of movies.
The event is being held at the Los Angeles Convention centre at the end of May, where fans will be able to enjoy screenings of the movies, buy merchandise and meet some of their favourite stars. A similar event in 2005 attracted over 34,000 people, but this latest celebration is set to be the biggest Star Wars party ever.
Now, we're slightly sceptical about this, because the game in question is said to be the rumoured Knights Of The Old Republic 3, a game which recently Bioware (on their forums ) have said they are 'not currently working on'. Not only that, but why would Lucas Arts choose to release details about the game at a Star Wars party, where the majority of the attendees would surely only be interested in the Star Wars films and not a game that is based in the Star Wars Universe? Wouldn't they? However, if it is true, it would make sense - with the renewed interest of Star Wars in general around that period - to announce the title as official.
Surprisingly, our source also claims that Lucas Arts will not only be revealing details of the new game during this period, but will also be showcasing a new 1 minute trailer (now this we don't buy).
The Official Xbox Magazine has recently speculated that Knights of the Old Republic 3 will be released in 2008, but we've been told it may be ready this side of Christmas.

In even more rumors...
There's been rumors of a KOTOR MMO... here's the link for that...

Anyways, things are really looking up for new KOTOR material. Can't wait for '08. I will post more when I find out more.

Thanks for the information, philosoldier. As for that Star Wars title, I'm really sceptical that it will be KOTOR 3, given that Lucasarts is currently working on 2 Star Wars titles. One is Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and the other is a Darth Vader game. Not to mention that there are rumours of Lucasarts working on a shooter set in a futuristic American Civil War (link - Source from Kotaku).

I am. Im 17 and about to start workin I dont have time for KOTOR III to be a MMORPG. I really really hope that it turns out to be a single-player game as the first two were so I can beat it in a week and be happy.Buck Satan wrote:Based on popular demand, I thought I'd open up a new rumor thread and kick it off with today's rumor that the next KotOR will be an MMORPG. maybe a little....since it was a RPG and not an MMORPG from the begining of the kotor series, then i think they should follow that upp in K3.Buck Satan wrote:the next KotOR will be an MMORPG. Anybody as disappointed as I am?
but at the same time im a little exciting for it...finaly we might be able to test our char aganst other ppl, because it getting boring doing the same thing over and over again.MMORPG always have more to do then a nomal RPG.
Zabuza Momochi: Your words cut deep....Deeper than any blade.
To be honest, if it is an MMORPG then they have lost at least one person that was looking forward to it, and I'm sure there are a lot more who, like me, have no interest in playing MMORPGs and in fact enjoy playing single player rather than multiplayer games. If KOTOR3 is an MMORPG then I will not be buying it, no matter how good it might be. If they want online options then why not do something similar to how they have done the NWN series so people at least have the choice about if they want to play online or just play single player. Or even create a single player KOTOR3 and then make an entirely seperate MMORPG set in the Old Republic. I really do not understand why people want to play a game where there will undoubtedly be thousands of "Revan" characters running around
Not to mention that in an MMORPG, the player is playing in a static world where the story doesn't progress unless there are expansions or additional content. I would have preferred if it stayed as a single-player game rather than a Massively-Multiplayer one. Not a fan of MMOs if you ask me. I used to play some before but grew bored of them and eventually lost all interest in them.

Considering how open-ended MMOs are, I don't see why KOTOR 3 *has* to be one. A Star Wars MMORPG in that setting and time period is the goal, I would think. I think about how Galaxies was doomed for failure from the very start, and consider the superior footing a MMORPG set during the time of the Republic would have...and see the enormous potential.
One of the reasons why Galaxies was doomed: everyone wanted a Jedi, and at that point in the storyline, they are out of the picture save for a very few. SOE attempted to introduce Jedi into Galaxies not long after the game launched, but the results were catastrophic. The game as it existed from launch was utterly destroyed by that move, and the exodus of players proved it was a mistake.
The period of time when KOTOR takes place solves that problem nicely, however.
I disagree that a MMORPG would be a lesser gaming experience. On the contrary, I think it would prove to be very enjoyable, as my own experience with them has shown. People are a diverse lot, and a MMO capitalizes on that factor. Doubtless you will have the Revans running around...but you will also establish a circle of online friends with whom gaming is taken to new levels. That's the best part of an MMO to me: you can solo, and you can tackle objectives with friends. The social aspect of it is strong. I can understand why that may not appeal to some, but to others, it's definitely a plus.

Allow me to interject a quick thought into the whole mmo concept. I am very much in favor of the concept of a single storyline which would be used in the single-player version of the game. The story of the exile and Revan in the unknown and the battle against the True Sith would be all in all an excellent gaming experience plot-wise.
However, in addition the main storyline, there could be an mmo. This would create the opportunity to enjoy KOTOR for many months/years to come. Additional plot lines could be developed and the creators could put episodic content into the KOTOR universe.
Therefore count me in on the folks who would like to see a KOTOR mmo, but with the caveat that there should be a main storyline which should be followed. Anyways, I'm excited. Post more rumors as they come up. Anyways, where's Bastilla? She's always full of the best rumors.

@philosoldier: My thoughts exactly. An MMO in the KOTOR time period would not interfere with the story unfolding in the single player series, and it's likely that a KOTOR III will still emerge as a single player game. There's a terrific demand for it, and I would think LucasArts will eventually devote time and resources to it in the near future.
We haven't seen Bastila in quite a while. Not sure where she ran off to. She'll show up here eventually.

ok...kotor 3 should release as a single player game like the other two...MMO games arent that bad either. (depends on what kind) im working on my own mmorpg text based game.(alpha testing)
but again kotor 3 should be in the same area as the other two games...they can change stuff and get new voice talent and ideas other than the same ideas as the other two. i think personally they should go back to the mandalore wars and create the single player RPG outta that.
Lucas arts should do an mmo game maybe in the same era as kotor but not based on it.
zaykodroid is right it would be cool to have a star wars mmo but not based on kotor. same era , same planets maybe but not involvong anything to do with kotor other than planets and the Revan story

KotOR I and II Veteran; Oblivion Veteran; Fallout 3 and New Vegas Veteran
Kind of agree here. I can't imagine an MMORPG revolving around a single character, especially that of Revan or the Exile. The story/events unfolding in the game world would sound much more plausible for this.chrishalomaster wrote: Lucas arts should do an mmo game maybe in the same era as kotor but not based on it.

I don't think it will be a success..., people will feel atraccted at first but, my prediction is it will dissapoint every1, not all kotor fans want the same but we do expect the same basics, certain characters and background story, and most important of all, an ending, something that a mmo cant satisfy because of its nature (i hope u get the meaning, my english isnt very good).
I disagree, an MMO can have a storyline ending, then have it's main character (you) start expanding their own things (maybe set up a jedi academy, collect teachings+members, invent new paths, wage war on eachother (Sith vs Jedi, would be PvP) everyone could have a home moon as an instanced area to build up (same for everyone, or maybe a small choice of maps) you could go to other peoples' worlds. a galaxy has a near infinity of worlds so setting-wise it wouldn't be a problem.Exiliado wrote:I don't think it will be a success..., people will feel atraccted at first but, my prediction is it will dissapoint every1, not all kotor fans want the same but we do expect the same basics, certain characters and background story, and most important of all, an ending, something that a mmo cant satisfy because of its nature (i hope u get the meaning, my english isnt very good).

More rumor news
I'll post it as I find it, but there's more rumor news and this is from the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Power Up | Massive reasons for gamers to cheer | Inquirer | 05/04/2007
Beyond what is publicly known, several juicy, MMO-flavored rumors have surfaced in recent days. Most exciting are whispers that a massively multiplayer version of LucasArts' classic Star Wars role-playing series, Knights of the Old Republic, could be on the way.
And while this isn't necessarily a rumor, the creator of KOTOR 2 gave an interview that can be found here...

Perhaps discussions about whether KOTOR as an mmo should be moved to a different thread. I thought this originally was going to be a "rumors found about kotor 3" as opposed to a discussion about kotor as an mmo. Anyways, good hunting on those rumors.

When you say storyline ending you're talking about 1 quest among hundred of them, and thats no real ending, mostly because two things, first the rest of the universe will be the same as the one before the quest, and second, mmo publishers want you to keep playing, and giving an end kotor story is not a good strategy.JFSOCC wrote:I disagree, an MMO can have a storyline ending, then have it's main character (you) start expanding their own things (maybe set up a jedi academy, collect teachings+members, invent new paths, wage war on eachother (Sith vs Jedi, would be PvP) everyone could have a home moon as an instanced area to build up (same for everyone, or maybe a small choice of maps) you could go to other peoples' worlds. a galaxy has a near infinity of worlds so setting-wise it wouldn't be a problem.
And about the features you mentioned, that has nothing to do with kotor and could be applied to galaxies mmo.
