I was just wondering how would you describe the story-line in Mass Effect?
I have not actually played this game, which is why I'm asking for your opinion. But from what I've read, you have your stereotypical protagonist Shepard which doesn't seem to have any interesting background (the Personal History Summary seemed rather cheesy), and your squad mates seem to have straight-forward objectives without much inner-conflicts.
I always dislike it when characters are simply born good at what they do or are extremely lucky as to be affected by a once-in-a-lifetime situation. I'd rather see them start as normal individuals, take command of their lives, manipulate their environment, and develop a personal philosophy that guides their self-education.
What about the story?
So, judging by the lack of responses, would it be safe to assume that Mass Effect has no actual story? XD I saw a lot of videos about this game and it just reminded me of Knight of the Old Republic I... so I thought I'd ask.
Or is the story no longer a relevant part of RPGs nowadays? Do developers focus more on eye-candy and battle effects?

It is difficult to discuss the story without giving away major spoilers.
In short, the main story is very entertaining. You will appreciate it if you like action movies as much as I do. The spectacular in-game cinematics, nice 100% voiceover, pleasant music, a few dramatic choices you have to make, and the ending(s) all add to the feeling of watching a movie. There are several squad members you pick up early in the game. My favorites are Garrus and Wrex. The most annoying - Liara. However, you quickly learn to choose your squad members according to their usefulness (depending on your class) because there is no personal interaction to be expected on a mission.

Man's most valuable trait is a judicious sense of what not to believe.
