Release date for Star Wars the Old Republic ?
I think it'll be sooner than expected, possibly mid 2009 or late 2009.
If it was really expected to be released 2 years from now, why would they announce it so early ?
Yup, i think it's going to come out sooner than expected

Afterall, few are better than Lucasarts when it comes to rush a game without the slightest need for it.

I think late 2009 I mean by the look at the video documentary http://www.swtor.com/media/vidcasts/viddoc001 the game play footage looks complete to me. I mean the graphics look amazing.

This game is not going to see beta till mid to late 2010. There is no way it gets pushed out in this year. At the very earliest we might see beta early in 2010 and get the game for play at the end of that year. I can't see them pushing out any mmo after only working on it for a year. Unless they have been working on it longer than we were told about.Jedi Guardian wrote:I think late 2009 I mean by the look at the video documentary http://www.swtor.com/media/vidcasts/viddoc001 the game play footage looks complete to me. Apparently there is a release date for the UK/Continental Europe for Jan. 29th 2010. If this is correct we only have eleven months to wait. I personally hope that if they can't reach this release date they don't rush it but push it back a few months. I personally don't want another KOTOR2 feasco. All the story they cut out to reach the release date almost ruined the game for me.
There is no public release date.
All dates seen at various retailers are pure guesswork because those companies have to write something and should not be taken as anything else.
Until Bioware sets a release date there is no actual date.
And even then - a release date can more often then not be pushed back.

Chronology
I've been following it for a while.
/ Discussions started in between LucasArts and Bioware in March '05. (This was reporter based rumormill info. LA's relationship with SOE had gone sour amidst the implosion of SWG after NGE, so rumors began surfacing that George was on the hunt for a replacement MMO and vendor. Bioware was speculated to be a prime candidate because the KOTOR series was not just seen as a financial and popular success, but also because Bioware showed great respect to the SW license with their work, something George was said to be supremely interested in. Further, basing the MMO during the run of KOTOR's timeline would explain why Jedi and Sith could be abundant in the universe, a massive problem that afflicted SWG. However, SOE had some kind of online SW license that was good through March '06, so George had until then to find a new company if he wanted to get things moving as quickly as possible.)
/ A deal was struck and work subsequently begun in March '06. (Although this was announced, LA merely stated that they were working on a Star Wars game with Bioware. Bioware stated they were working on an MMO, but did not link it to LA or SW. So theoretically, we were supposed to be believe there was a Star Wars Bioware console game in development, along with an unspecified Bioware MMO. They maintained this until the announcment.)
/ The swtor.com domain name was registered in July '07. (Along with several TOR domains. To my knowledge, the registering of these domains was never publicly commented on.)
/ The official announcement was October 21st '08.
/ Since then, I have only seen one "official" update on the game's progress. That was the 5 minute developer video released on Feb 5th, 2009.
/ I saw an interview with George Lucas (perhaps 2 years ago?) where he described an animated series and mmorpg releasing around the same time and being intwined. As details firmed up on the animated show, it was hoped that the game would quickly follow suit, but of course it didnt. The series debuted in Oct '08 and has nothing to do with TOR.
I have heard that it takes about 3 years to develop a full scale mmorpg. So that means it would be releasing... right about now. Of course, it also takes six months of beta to test a new mmo, so that would put the earliest release in Sept '09. But since beta isnt even under discussion publicly, we really dont know much. We just know that we should be approaching beta very soon for the amount of time the game's been under development.

Most people seem to be guessing at 2010, but everything is guessing right now. Even if beta was starting/underway -I wouldn't use that to attribute to a release date, as I've seen closed public betas lasting for over a year.
I hope Bioware actually takes the time to polish this MMO unlike so many other developers who said they take the time to polish only to release a sorry shamble of a game.
This isn't 2004 anymore - people expect more quality in launch and a smooth launch is ever so important.
