Picking Locks if you are not Rogue

Post by blacktryst »

If you are not a rogue, can you pick locks if you invest points in that skill like any other RPG game? Also, if you cannot pick the lock and you do not have a rogue in your team, can you bash open locked boxes, chests like in NWN 2?

Lock picking requires the "Deft Hands" Talent branch, which only the Rogue class has access to. Twenty hours in I'm still at a loss for any other method to open sealed chests - since quest-important areas are never behind a locked door that you can't get a key to, I suspect you can't just bash them open.

You need a Rogue with the appropriate skill to pick locks, and its the only way; no bashing, no "Knock"-like spell.

I think the reasoning is that since there's only three classes, if Mages or Warriors could open locked doors/chests it would make Rogues quite a bit more redundant.

Has anyone else found Daveth somewhat less than inspiring when it comes to opening chests? As he never gains XP, I can only guess he's a second tier NPC: keep him alive, use him for battle, otherwise he's good for just about nothing.

Spoiler

If you haven't reached the Joining yet, the reason that he never gains XP is:

he dies and you can't keep him in your party.

Yeah, got that. Still, I wish he'd had the skills. After all, there are chests in camp and in the wilds that nobody can pick in your party at that point.

Those chests like those in the starting background areas are extras for those who pick a rogue to play :)

As a rogue there were some chests in the Camp and Wilds that were utterly beyond my PC's skill. Given Daveth's apparent history, I thought he might have a higher lock picking skill, but no such luck. There were things I couldn't open even up until the time I left the area.

Playing as a Rogue, the first chests that I encountered that I couldn't open weren't til Redcliffe (which I went first after Lothering). Granted, I had the second-tier skill and a Cunning of about 22, so that might've been why I didn't have too many problems with locks.

Its weird that they wouldn't try to give Daveth some form of skill picking locks though, since he IS the first NPC rogue you encounter. You'd think they would want you to be able to open chests, as not being able to is...frustrating.

I have to wonder whether it was an oversight, something they'll correct in a patch. After all, they did give him stealth, and the ability to handle poisons. Surely a city boy used to picking pockets (and the actor's Cockney accent was great, though it plays into stereotypes yet-again) like Daveth would also have a level in opening locked chests? It makes no sense as it is.
