A very pertinent point.

Palin's ghost-written autobiography/essay/thingee book is apparently doing very well before it's even been released. It's nice to see that failure, cynicism, and a pair of supermodel tits can work for anybody in the US of today!

Couple of things. First, Palin's made a stir by advocating the removal of one of the touchiest, most beloved sacred cows of USian government subsidy--Medicare, government-paid medical care for the elderly--with a system of vouchers that covers little. Most other Republicans are ducking and running for cover on this one, but she has found support from one of the dumbest members of Congress, a man who believes Obama is a Marxist and that the emergency room is the solution to chronic depression. You can read about it, here.

On another front, Palin's ghost-written autobiography, Going Rogue, became an instant bestseller long before its publication. Conservative think tanks have bought have huge quantities in advance to give away and create the impression of a groundswell of popularity. As a result, a group of savvy commentators are issuing their own book: Going Rouge: An American Nightmare. It features a host of articles on Palin by people very familiar with her career and the facts that often get left behind in the mainstream press. My guess is that this won't sell anywhere as well as the original, since think tanks funded by the likes of Forbes and Murdoch won't be purchasing them by the cartload. But it should prove more enlightening, and probably more entertaining.

fable wrote:...The whole thing, like the bizarre birther movement and the nutjobs screaming at August townhalls held by politicians, has been repeatedly shown to be funded and orchestrated by large corporate health insurance providers and major conservative "think tanks." New organizations set up to manage these events were quickly traced back by a some very good investigative reporting to their sources.

So what we have is the wingnuts suddenly being thrust into the spotlight on very well corporate-funded wings, with the blessing of a mainstream media that loves drama even when it's engineered...
Ah yes, the American tradition of using "the big lie" to sway hearts and minds. What's most distressing is even when confronted with facts that expose the big lie, many prefer the lie over the truth. I'm flabbergasted that Sarah Palin's garbage was published...but I'm not flabbergasted that Big Liars inflated book sales in order to make it appear like she's some sort of sensation. Sadly, I come to expect that as par for the course these days.

That's not unlike how the producers of Barney brainwash their juvenile viewers into hysterical responses concerning their nefarious product. By displaying children cheering and clapping whenever Barney arrives on the scene, they pull a Big Lie on their audience as well. Sometimes you get the sinking feeling the whole damn society is nothing but a lie.

Hi, Chanak! Good to see you, again. :)

Latest on the Palin front: In West Alice, Wisconsin, Palin gave a no-media-allowed anti-abortion speech last Friday--except that the local organizers sold tickets to members of the media. As a result, they got a wonderful rant about how the words "In God We Trust" away from the center and onto the edge of the new US Dollar coins. This, we are told, was evidence both of needless change and anti-Christian values from certain current administrations that will be unnamed.

Apparently, she was unaware that it had been proposed in 2005 by a Republican Congress and approved by Bush.

I've been hearing her termed The Toxic Queen, of late, and comparisons to Dan Quayle. As someone remarked, once you go that far into unreliability, there's probably no coming back...but this is the Divine Sarah. Who knows?

As a Wisconsite, I'll modestly correct, it's West Allis, just west of Milwaukee. She wanted to try to pull this off in Madison, but her safety could not be guaranteed. It's both frightening and disappointing she'd be allowed to speak publicly anywhere, or that people would want to attend. The tidbit about groups buying up massive copies of her book prior to release is amsuing. Fahrenheit 451, anybody?

Thanks. I'm only very slightly familiar with Wisconsin, though if my wife had signaled less disdain for the cold when we were looking to move out of New Jersey 2 years ago, Madison might be our home base, now.

An advance copy accidentally got into the hands of one reporter, and the summary is out, today. Briefly:

In the book, "Going Rogue: An American Life," Palin contends that the McCain campaign stuck her with a $50,000 bill for the cost of her own vetting, botched the announcement of her teenage daughter's pregnancy, outfitted Palin with all those infamous costly ensembles, and shielded her from reporters. Even so, Palin goes on to belittle two famous interlocutors, Katie Couric and Charles Gibson...

All of which is very, very funny--especially the part about the sympathetic airhead Couric and the extremely conservative Gibson, both of whom gave her a complete pass in their now-famous interviews. And the idea that the McCain campaign forced her to buy several hundred thousands of dollars worth of outfits...? I'm sure they held a Kalazhnikov to her head.

"You know, that's a great question," Palin said, adding, "I think he needs to know that he is loved and he has the most beautiful child and this can all work out for good. It really can. We don't have to keep going down this road of controversy and drama all the time. We're not really into the drama. We don't really like that. We're more productive. We have other things to concentrate on."
Oh dear, she's using the 'Royal' We already, she'll be expecting everyone to bow and curtsey to her next!

Wow I need to make sure I have some booze on hand before I read any new post in this thread. just when I think her stupidity found a limit she just goes ahead and proves that well is bottomless.

Comparing the health care changes to the nazis is the same as saying the Soviet union was an evil empire? neither is specifically true, but one is far farther from the truth than the other. HMMM I wonder just which one that was.

It truly is bottomless.. have you seen some of the excerpts from her book?
Her attempts to back out of her fiasco performance at the Katie Couric interview are almost as entertaining as the original episode.

Dear God No!!!!! :p My brain is nearly mush as it is. If I read it the zombie plague my overtake me too!! Must avoid book of evil, dark mistress must not get the precio... oops wrong story :p .

Where was I? Seriously maybe I am missing a good laugh. but I can get those in ways that are not as depressing. There is regrettbly a very real possibility that this nightmare of a politician may get close to real power. Laughter should not come with that creep factor.

Can anyone of you Americans out there please explain to me why this Sarah Palin Newsweek cover is supposed to be 'provocative' and 'sexist'?
I mean, compared to a potato sack or full-body burqa sure, but I'm pretty sure ol' SP doesn't sway that way.

Here is a another juicy tidbit I picked off the pare this morning. Palin likes Fox’s Beck as potential running mate - Nova Scotia News - TheChronicleHerald.ca

I don't know what is worse, Palin one heartbeat from being president...or Glen Beck. there is a match made in hell if there ever was one.

A match made in heaven I'd say. How to ensure the GOP stays out of the White House for four more years? Let those two be the Republican nominees, surely there can't be enough imbeciles in the US to vote that combo in.

PS Why do you guys on the west of the Atlantic insist on spelling titbit wrong?

Have you already forgotten GW Bush elected for a second term?

PS Why do you guys on the west of the Atlantic insist on spelling titbit wrong?
Could ask the same about people on your side of the Atlantic. After all it rolls off the tongue easier and doesn't offend the sensibilities of the descendants of the puritans who would cry havoc at the word tit being part of a commonly used term.

Honestly I thought it was slang, therefore spelling did not matter.

Bush was smart enough to form complete sentences, read from prepared scripts, consult with people who knew better than he did, and lie convincingly, as several biographies of his White House years by insiders attest. Palin does none of those things. She's infinitely ambitious, but intellectually lazy and dishonest, and becomes very belligerent when she simply displays her own stupidity. I mean--blaming Couric, of all people, for playing hardball with her? Couric?

Not to mention that Palin represents the complete wingnut, lunatic fringe faction of the Republican Party. In terms of perception, at least, Bush seems moderate and rational by comparison. Also, to quote something I read recently, "Palin makes Dan Quail look like Einstein."
My sense is that a lot of moderate Republicans are either on the purge list, or they are simply distancing themselves from the party. I don't think that really bodes well for election success.
Or, maybe I'm just strangely optimistic.
