BG2-Soundclips- .wav is MPEG 2.5?

Recently, seeking to get all the NPC voice acting (not the soundsets, so don't link to those), I used Winbiff to get all of the sound files. They are all .wav format. None of my music players can play them, but I can play any of them If I put them in the sounds folder of the BG2 directory and select them when picking a voice in character creation.

So I began browsing for something the could play/decode or convert theses files. Browsing some forums, I read that SCMPX might be able to play them. I got it and when I try to play the files, it says "MPEG 2.5 is not supported".

I did some research and found out that MPEG 2.5 was essentially some sort of strain of MPEG that was used in the late 90's (or something like that).

So I began looking for something that can play or convert MPEG 2.5 files and have had NO LUCK AT ALL.

I figured I'd post my problem and see if I'm trying to figure out something that's already been done.

Any ideas of how to play or convert these odd files to MP3?

A good piece of software for audio conversion is Sound Forge - supports many formats. Just google it !

Some more info...

After some more hunting around, I turned up a player that said it could play MPEG 2.5 Layer 3 files. When I tried to load the sound files, it said that the file was an unsupported format. I'm starting to think that bioware/black isle made their own strain of this already obscure format.

Soundforge has a 300$ price tag and Goldwave just played extremely loud static.

I am beginning to lose hope.

Sound Converter

Greetings. This is my first post, so bear with me. I just happen to have a program that can work with this sound format. I used it succesfully years ago, ripping Baldurs Gate soundsets for Baldurs Gate 2. The program was made in germany, but supports english. I could send it by email if you are interested.

Sound Forge Professional is arounf 300$, the basic version retails around 45$. If that's out of your budget-range a free converter can be found at this adress. There are dozens of variants in the web
