Major problem with ranged character, please help

Post by Maelovich »

My main character is a low constitution, low strength mage who spellcasts and uses a sling for ranged attacks. Recently he became mysteriously unable to attack from a distance, and walks right up to a target before attacking. What can I do to keep him out of melee battles? This actually feels like a bug/glitch to be honest.

UPDATE: I've tried all the obvious things. Now it seems he's doing the same thing with all his spells. wtf?

Check to make sure he has bullets. Is he out of ammunition? If not, could you accidentally have highlighted his melee weapon?
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

Perhaps I should have been more clear in the original post: I have checked everything. I've tried exchanging his sling for darts, using a different sling, unequipping his melee weapon, anything I could think of, and there was no change. He runs up to opponents and attacks them point-blank with the damn sling. Maybe there's something technical I need to change? All suggestions welcome.

Where and how? I've tried to customise his attack method but it changes nothing.

You're using the default AI? Because many will tell you that it's not terribly good. I always handle combat manually, myself.

Yes, so do I. I just thought it might change something. No luck.

My initial thought was the same as Kmonster's; he is not blind is he? That is exactly how they behave when they are blinded by something.

Whether blindness can become permanent I do not know, but it would be a cool feature if it could and you would have to use a priest or temple to get it cured.

Not blind, no. I think I'll just download a patch and see if that helps, reinstall if it doesn't. Seriously, all obvious solutions seem to be out in this case.

Fortunately I had one earlier game saved that I could go back to. Problem... resolved, anyway. Hope no one else ever has to deal with this truly frustrating bug. Thanks for all the suggestions!

How did you resolve it? Though I have never heard of the problem before, it may happen again and someone like Fable, who is ever here, will remember and be able to aid the next person.

It could have been the blindess effect from the druid spell 'Nature's Beauty' perhaps? I'm not sure if the typical blindness icon shows up for this, so you may not have realised. This blindness is permanent till dispelled. No resting it off.

The issue, again, being that you may not realise without an icon on the portrait alerting you to this. What you are experiencing definitely has the symptoms of blindness though.

I have to say, I don't think i've ever come across the AI casting this spell though, and if you were not at a sufficiently advanced stage of the game it pretty much rules it out.

Just a possibility.
