Good Class, plus ideas for a new Thief
I am currently a noob in this game and I want someone's ideas on what to use as a thief. Should I go Throwing weapons? A Bow? Should I dual Wield daggers or short swords?
I want to make a character that can dodge and easily get away from opponents by making a few easy rolls and flips; and at the same time be able to come right back and take my opponent out with grace.
My question is what will work best for this build? I have absolute no idea with what are the good attributes for a thief, what is more important for a thief, agility or dexterity? Should i dual wield light weapons, if so what would be a good race to start with? I was gonna go with a wylvan because they might make a good thief, but then again, the only other choice would be a human. I am just so confused as there are so many skills and attributes.
If anyone has any tips on what to increase at character generation, I'm all ears.

IIRC, ranged weapons don't do enough damage to rely on them exclusively. Dual wielding can be fun. Just make sure you select classes that will allow you to do it.

Don't over-train dexterity; especially if you plan to play through the game more than once with this character. The infamous "strike" bug is not fun at all for melee characters. I suggest only training dexterity as high as absolutely necessary, and use trinkets to increase your strike rating without going over 100.
Ranged weapons, as a whole, should not be relied on. from the time you see enemies in the distance, you will not get many attacks before they are in close range. Between thrown weapons and archery, though, I prefer archery. It has a higher range, as well as more power.
Daggers are okay, but, ideally, you will want to keep your enemies a little bit farther away. With this build, you will probably not acquire heavy weapons skill, so a medium sword should be your primary weapon.
Dual wielding is great, and highly suggested for any melee-dependent character - and especially one without heavy weapons. But keep in mind that doesn't mean that you necessarily have to go that route, if there is something else you would like your character to have.
As far as your race is concerned, Wylvan, Elf and Thrall are all great rogue-class races. What you are looking for is the best balance of agility and intellect, as these are the two attributes where you will spend the most points. Zaur is okay because of its agility, but I shy away from it because of its intellect. Human is the "average" race - and is pretty much good for everything, but not great for anything.
I'd suggest these for your classes: Mage-Sorcerer/Rogue-Budoka-Ninja Lord.
That will give you all the ranged weapon skills (7 each) for you to decide which you like best; light dual weapons; sneak and backstab skills (great for sneaking up behind enemies); and critical strike (one-hit kills; my personal favorite ability). So you can see where that build would take you.

Ninjitsu
Please keep in mind, once your character gains Ninjitsu, you will have to equip a weapon to jump 'properly'.
Since you are new to the game, there are some maximum skill levels you should not exceed: Most of all, any weapons related skill (top row in your character sheet, and the weapons related diabolical skills) as well as the magic weapon skill should go no higher than 15. That'll be enough to use any weapon without raising your hit bonus above 100. (The different attack moves carry hidden hit bonuses that are added, and as Cionaoith points out, you run the risk of not being able to hit anything). You might want to do a forum search on this.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm sorry but how does this game's class system work. Do I get to multi-class?
After reading the posts, I think i'm just going to forget about ranged weapons and just go with two short swords or longswords.
Oh yeah and how do you get into sneak mode and how does it work. Is it a button on the keyboard, because i checked the controls page in options and it doesn't say what button it is.

Never ignore the value of being able to hit enemies when they can't hit you, don't give up completely on ranged weapons. there are places in the game where you can climb on top of railings and roofs (the huts in the opening area are a good example) and just shoot away merrily. Another quite valuable place is the Altar on the island where you pick up the moonstones; the columns can be climbed, although it can be a tad immersion breaking, and pickoff Moonbeasts to you heart's content, and they are worth a lot of experience points.
Good bows are easier to obtain than good throwing knives/Shurikens, but the range seems to be poorly implemented in the game, so the inferior stated range of Shuriken isn't that much of a disadvantage.

There isn't a "sneak mode." It is as simple as an enemy facing the wrong direction, and you run up behind him and attack. If you don't have the sneak ability, though, he will likely hear you approaching.
The class system is pretty simple, but the explanation can sound difficult. There are three tiers of class training that your character can do. There are four first tier classes; Adept, Fighter, Mage, and Rogue. Fighter class has four choices for second tier classes, and each other first tier class has three. Each second tier class then has one third tier class that you can learn. Your character can gain 2 first tier classes, 2 second tier classes, and 1 third tier class, for a total of 5 classes.
There are two second tier classes and one third tier class that are available only to female characters (elf or human).
This table shows how all of that works:

One more final question, does the sneak bonuses apply to ranged weapons?

Well, you will only get one hit before someone realizes you have attacked them and responds. I don't think you need the sneak skill to attack someone from behind with ranged weapons, though, since you are attacking from a distance - not trying to sneak up behind them.
However, if you have sneak and backstab abilities - which you will have once you acquire the cabalist class - it would be beneficial to use melee weapons when you are able to attack from behind. I don't think you get the backstab bonus with ranged weapons.

But still, do i get a strike bonus when attacking them when they are unaware using ranged weapons?
