Game for a six year old

My 6yr old grandson LOVES Oblivion. Trouble is, his reading is only 6yr lvl, so he doesn't understand a lot of the written stuff (mind you, it IS improving his reading, lol!); also, he insists on doing quests, which I have to finish because he gets scared. I wish I'd never let him watch me playing in the first place.

Anyway, does anyone know of a game, suitable for a child of his age(and taste for Oblivion-type RPGs), that would work on a machine that can play Oblivion but probably not anything much newer.

All suggestions gratefully received!

Have you tried the original fable game? Its very kid-like and not too scary

but isn't that on-line only? I wanted to play it myself when I first heard of it, but I got the impression it was on-line, so I didn't even look out for it, me not liking on-liners.

Edit: Just checked Amazon, and no it's not on-line - I was thinking Final Fantasy, I think. But anyway they have 2 'collectors' copies of Fable available. But it just says 'for Windows'. Will it work on XP?

I checked some more, mr_sir, and discovered that Fable: The Lost Chapters is an expansion of the original and playable on XP, so I have ordered it from Amazon. Since the main char starts off as a child it should suit my grandson very well. Many thanks!

I have just the thing for you. Someone made a children's mod for Morrowind, with colorful trees, unicorns instead of monsters, that sort of thing. It's a lot less scary and very friendly.

Can't find a link right now because I don't remember the title. Someone here might though. I'll look a bit.

It's standard Morrowind, though, and the dialog isn't at a 6 year old's level. There's also a bit of sexual content. But Brash's textural re-design is great.

This reminds me of something.

My son was *extremely* stubborn about learning to read. We knew he could do it, but he was just too lazy to really put the effort into it.
Well, at the time he was playing a lot of my games, like BG2 and so on... and he was always asking me to read the dialogue to him. I decided to stop reading it, and he was doing it himself within a month...

In a few months more he was reading material far above his age level; he had only needed that boot to get him over the edge. So.. it might be worthwhile to encourage him to play games that he has some trouble reading, who knows?

I'm not, really. I didn't mind him watching me because I was very careful what I played in his presence (nothing really scary, and no stealing), but he kept begging me to let him play, so I asked his dad (my son), thinking he'd say 'no way!' - and he gave permission! :speech: So I was stuck with it.

His dad now regrets it. Which is partly why I want a more suitable PC game. The other reason is cos I'm a bit fed up with having to help him so much!

Yeah.

My grandson can recognise far more words now than he could before he started playing, too, but big wadges of text still have him yelling for 'Nanny!'; and choosing dialogue options has him puzzled, even when he can read 'em, cos he doesn't know which to choose. Sigh...

Regarding my grandson's reading: he was 3 months premature at birth, and consequently he was very slow with language and manual skills; however he is now ahead of his year with language comprehension and vocabulary, though still a little behind with reading. He, too, is reluctant to learn, but the game is helping him see the need! :laugh:

Look, porn is not really good for kids, especially when they are six years old

And maybe your grandson likes the Pokémon games, they don't really got oblivion elements, but they've got some RPG-elements and they're child-friendly (If you haven't got a gameboy, you can always download an emulator)

Eh... I entirely respect that Fljotsdale isn't comfortable with her grandson playing Oblivion.

That being said, while I would describe Oblivion with a variety of adjectives, "pornographic" is not one of them (certainly not the vanilla game anyway).

Hmm, I wouldn't really consider Fable really "kid friendly"(But I was playing it at ten, and I'm turning out pretty well, so what the hell do I know?) Oblivion isn't really too bad; a bit of swearing, a bit of violence(not as bad as fallout 3) and a bit of minor sexual content(MUCH less then Fable) Maybe Morrowind, as Tricky said, so it's more reading, less listening?

Hm. Well. I agree with Sain. I have now, unfortunately, introduced my grandson to Fable (the game, not the moderator

), straight after playing the first bit myself. I have now played it a bit more, and find it is far less suitable for a 6yr old than Oblivion. Not only are the mouse/keyboard controls trickier than Oblivion's (boy! How they make my wrist ache!), but the content is, despite the cartoon-like characters and background, much gorier, and much tougher, much sooner. I have restarted my char 3 times now, trying to make him tougher (and it annoys me I can't play a girl, btw), but I still can't get the merchants through Darkwood Quest (yes, that's as far as I've got) and I have to try to get my grandson through there as well, soon enough! Unless I tell his dad it isn't suitable.

Depends on your timing. The last time I played, I got hit by his boulders a lot even when I tried my best to whack it back at him. Only with slow time was I able to do so.

In my opinion, a more safer route to defeating him for a low level character is to pelt him with arrows (or magic) and dodge any incoming boulders he throws at you.
