Strange and unexpected, is it? :)

Fable, you're right, we do have similar arrangements in major cities. The problem starts in smaller towns, where the homeless simply have nowhere to go. And of course some shelters refuse to accomodate those under influence of alcohol, and our homeless usually drink a lot. I don't blame them. But things are looking up in that area, i hear. One of the rare advantages of our situation is that we can learn from other countries' experiences while the problem is not as widespread yet.

I'm having trouble getting a handle on this. Do you mean, retreat from becoming the Storm Lords of the North? You, from leading a pack of vicious beer-guzzling white wolves? DW in a chainmail bikini?

Well looks like I forgot a few words, reverse AMERICAN manifest destiny (if that makes any sense). Apparently my language skills are degrading with age. :(

Here in Finland, the weather is a bit under zero at the moment. Not snowing just now, but did earlier today. There is around 10cm of snow, which is fine enough. So basically, the ideal winter weather.

In the Netherlands we've had the first snowy christmas since 1981. Although barely; it rained from day one and now there is hardly anything left.

Yeah I live there too,

Mostly mild winters and mild summers...

That's why I go to France or Italy every holiday

-17 degrees of C here, and very snowy. It's not common to have this much snow this long around these parts of Finland.

It's 54 degrees F/12 Celcius here in my neck of the woods. Chilly for the Southern California natives, but no big deal for me. Skies are clear. Pretty evening out there.

About 15 F, windchill of -1. Cloudy skies. Who needs southern California? :p

It's Chanak's fault. Look at his weather comment, above ours! He's obviously siphoning off our good weather to make his area's great. Let's get him!

Strangely enough, Norway is a lot colder than Holland!

I'm extremely embarrassed to be British this morning, I've had it demonstrated to me this morning what a pathetic nation we've become.

I had an appointment this morning on the other side of the river from where I live, walked down to the ferry only to find out there are no busses running in Plymouth today due to the weather. The layer of snow is so thin that you'd need a micrometre to measure it, we're talking millimetres here, not inches or even centimetres; and it isn't even close to freezing either, water is freely flowing in the gutters.

The BBC's web site has the headline PS Just checked the BBC News page; headline
Snow disrupts schools and travel
, yet all the supporting photos illustrate just how little snow has actually fallen in most places.

The Great in Great Britain certainly disappeared somewhere over the last fifty years, if anyone finds it please return it!

Ah, but this isn't ordinary snow: it's French snow. Snow with garlic breath, that will taunt you when you turn your back!
