Will I Enjoy This Game?

Post by Funky Chicken »

So before I go fork out $100 for this game i'd like to get n opinion or two on whether I would enjoy this game. I absolutely loved BG 1 & 2, Neverwinter Nights and KOTOR 1 & 2. How similar is it to those games and will I enjoy DAO given that I enjoyed those games.

You most likely will, but nobody can say other then you.
It is in my opinion far superior to NwN1+2 and can rival BG1 and falls a little short of BG2.

If you like NWN 2 you'll like this one for sure. I agree with Xandax that BG1 is probably the game to compare DA:O with.

Yeah, pretty sure you'll like it. For me it feels a bit like a mixture of Kotor series and the BG ones. I can see why people compare it more to BG1 than BG2. It's the first time Bioware has used this (new) game setting and engine(?).

The game sucks and nobody likes it.

J/k, I like it, and most of us here seem to enjoy it too. 100 hours of entertainment for US$45? Bargain.

I understand that no game is perfect, but I've played nearly all of the major good rpgs, and I liked Risen a lot and hated Oblivion (100% chameleon?! give me a break), and I think that BG2 and KOTOR have been probably the best rpg's previously...

and I think that Dragon Age: Origins is the best rpg made, ever. There are other contenders, but Dragon Age combines 3 things:

- fights are decently challenging but the game can also be won w/o dying once you know what you are doing, with gold, items, stats and skills continuing to matter and not become badly irrelevant or imbalanced

- story is very well done and world is immersive

As a random rant... why the heck is Oblivion constantly touted as a good game? Bethseda always has game destroying problems with their games, which aren't even that good to begin with. What kind of lame game has all wooden characters, pathetically implemented level scaling, no reason whatsoever to explore or do quests (since any dungeon is randomly generated and re-spawns, and quests give no items that are better than ones you can make yourself), and... 100% chameleon with gear you can easily make yourself, which makes you absolutely impervious from any attack from any enemy in the entire game, no exceptions?

... And to people who say, "well, um, just don't use 100% chameleon then," I say, "how can I get excited about any leveling up or finding good gear if I have to self-police my own power level?

- there are no major problems, although of course we call all think of ways to improve the game

What I always hated about Oblivion is that there aren't any children around anywhere in the world (to cuddle or slaughter and eat or whatever ;) )...that seemed a little unrealistic! But other than that it's a pretty good game with a huge world and a lot of alternatives for character developement ( a key element in RPG's) You cannot really compare it with games like DAO, NVWN2 and BG, simply because, except from the CRPG label, they are e-n-t-i-r-e-l-y different...you could compare with Gothic and Risen of-course!

Now for the original post... HELL YEAH! DA:O game is really amazing, it combines the best Bioware has to offer (today), it has some flaws but if you get past them you will find yourself stuck with it for a looooooong time...

( I must respectfully disagree about DAO being better than BG1 though...not even close! To me the twists in the plot of BG1 were phenomenal and the atmosphere, even with these old graphics, unparalleled... BG1 was a beautifull ilusion back then!)

Hey there I just made an account on Game Banshee today, so this is my first post although I've checked out these forums occasionally for about 3 years. This post seems as good a time as any to jump in!

In case you haven't gone out and bought it, stop wasting time! If you're a Bioware fan you'll like DA:O. I kept feeling like it was something of a hybrid between their Baldur's Gate and KOTOR series. The companion system and world layout is very similar to KOTOR's, while the combat has a party tactics angle that felt reminiscent of BG and NWN2.

I bought it on day one (sometime in November if i remember correctly) and am still on second and third playthroughs. If you were worried it might be a shallow version of Mass Effect in fantasy land, don't be. DA:O has an extremely fleshed out backstory in a world that feels inhabited. The characters (even minor ones) have distinct personality backed up by great voice acting. I know many gamers here are D&D fans, but even if you are one I bet you'd be satisfied with the DA universe. Rather than go for an original setting that was silly and incoherent (like a certain game developer named after a cold, snowy storm) Bioware delivered a dark fantasy setting that minimizes the role of magic, clearly is inspired by medieval history, and avoids any overt sarcasm in it's tone.

I'm also going to speak up and say I didn't like Oblivion. The presentation of an RPG's setting is absolutely critical for me and all the houses in all the cities of Oblivion looked the same, while all the voice acting sounded unvaried. I also just didn't like the combat system.
