Rotating NPCs

Post by mrdeluxe »

Hi everyone!

I need a little advice: In my party of: PC, Minsc, Jaheira, Aerie and Haer'Dalis I reserved the last spot to rotating NPCs that I'll pick-up according to their quests, before taking Yoshimo to Spellhold.

So, I'll use:

Nalia during the D'Arnisse seize,
Cernd on the Trademeet troubles,
Valygar for the Planar Sphere,
Mazzy on the Umar Hills,
Keldorn for the Unseeing Eye,
Korgan for is own quest,
Edwin for Mae'Var's (and maybe for the whole of Chapter 3).

That leaves Jan, Viconia and Anomen out, as the Slavers / Copper Coronet, Windspear Hills and some other random quests (like the Graveyard errands).

Who do you recommend taking on these quests, and what advices can you give me? (For example, I read that if I take Cernd with me to Athkatla I trigger is personal quest).

Thank you!

I'd say that you should take your time, and instead of planning on how to get all the quests, just enjoy your game and keep 'em comming.
But here we go..

Viconia has no quests (except for rescuing her in Gov District), unless you want to romance her, then she has many quests including one in ToB. She does however have in-party conflicts with many other characters.

Jan has two quests (one if them is triggered right when you agree to buy a Flasher), and great dialogues with everyone. (second quest is triggered after random gnome pops by and talks to Jan)
Anomen has one quest, that leads to another quest. Depending on the quests he may have even more in-party conflicts than Viconia (and that's a huge achievement) (Both trigger after random guy pops by and talks to him.)
Nalia has one quest post D'arnisse Keep takeout. (after random guy pops by and talks to Nalia)
Mazzy has one quest post Amaunthor Temple. (after random gnome pops by and talks to Mazzy)
Keldorn has one quest post Unseeing Eye. (in Gov district, after you find his home)
Cerndt has one quest post Trademeet. (after random guy pops by and talks to Cerndt)
Edwin has one long, and funny quest post Mae'Var Treachery. (after Edwin mentiones it)

The problem with above is that personal quests take time to trigger, and unless you activate them via CLUAConsole commands, you would have to wait for them to pop (wait very, very long time).

So unless you want to use console, or wait, then just pick your party and keep them all with you. You dont have to take Keldorn, Cerndt, Edwin etc. to solve the quests they are involved in (you DO have to take them to solve their personal quests. The ones that take time to trigger)

Keep Yoshimo in party ;) there are some traps and locked doors in De'Arnisse, Unseeing Eye etc. Not having a thief is bad

Keldorn's a natural for the Windspear hills and will offer some extra dialog, though as an aspiring knight Anomen is a good option too - same goes for the false paladins mini-quest. Any opinionated good NPC will do for the slaver quest - Minsc is a favourite but besides that Mazzy or Nalia spring to mind as especially appropriate.
Personally though, I'd take Anomen and/or Edwin, and try to complete (or fail if you're so inclined) their quests as well. If you have Shadowkeeper and do a little research it's pretty easy to speed up their timers.

I advise having Edwina talk to Salvanas in the Copper Coronet, just turn off Party AI first is all.

Thanks for the answers guys, last night I freed the Slaves with Jan but Aerie did most of the talk, right now I'm doing the Xzar/Montaron/Harpers quest still with Jan. I'm trying to do as much stuff as I can to trigger his quest and hoping to see a Jan / Haer'Dalis dialog. I don't really want to user Shadowkeepr, though. If it happens, it happens, if it doesn't I'll leave it to another run.

I've decided to have Keldorn with me through all the Unseeying Eye quest, Paladin stronghold quest and Windspear Hills so I'll trigger his personal quest and end it by releasing him.

I just wish that all NPCs had a nice way to release them from the party like Keldorn, they are all awesome and it's hard to take some out. Right now I have Misnc, Jaheira, Aerie, Haer'Dalis and Jan and it sucks to boot someone out, especially since Jan is the most probable candidate, since I don't need his thieving skills (my PC is a Fighter/Thief) and his magic is redundant with Aerie, Haer'Dalis and Imoen.

Edwin (and Edwina) will probably be with me through all Chapter 3, lot's of time for his quest and maybe time enough for Minsc to get angry and sparing me the burden of removing him myself.

Anomen I just plain don't like, but might pick him up a little just for his quest, if I'm in the mood. Or just make him fail his quest, let him attack Aerie then destroying the pretentious git.

That leaves Viconia. I really like Viconia as a character and as a Cleric and it's hard not to take her with me, but I can't figure out out quest can I have with her so I'll probably just not let her join when I rescue her.
