BG2, a game unsurpassable

While the Baldur's Gate Saga remains my favorite game series, I do have to admit that (in my opinion) it, and Planescape: Torment, fall a few steps short of the first two Fallout games when it comes to choices and being able to play the game almost any way you want to.

I like BG2/ToB because it is uncompromising in kicking your @ss.

Too many games, especially on the console are way too easy. Stupid crap like automatically re-energizing shieds, respawning, ridiculous AI, heavily recycled enemies etc.

Sure, once you know what enemies are where, it's a different ball game but try to remember back to your first playthough of BG2/ToB....before you looked at a walk through or scanned a forum for answers or tips (or just plain cried for "help!")....remember how that game slaughtered you gloriously over and over again.

You *knew* you should of buffed up your party before going into that room...but you didn't. And for being lax, you got slathered in your own blood.

Well, imagine it like BG2 but with twice the story, twice the concept, twice the settings, twice the NPCs but one third the gameplay. If that sounds like a game you'd enjoy, go for it. To me it's the second best game of all times. BG2 of cource taking the first place.

I was going to post a Dak'kon quote, but I couldn't. Instead, I'll describe how Planescape: Torment made me feel:

I'm no child of Bhaal, no half-elven ranger, no dwarven mercenary. I'm lost in a world void of meaning, where actions have no consequence for their indulgent accessibility. I'm not interested in death, or acting out some fantastical reality, all I'm interested in is me, and making sense of a world which becomes more and more alien.

This game changed my life, and I often think of it. Don't play it as a game, play it as an experience.

Best well rounded game experience I don't think you can compare BG2 to PS:T they are different things as someone previously stated PS:T is a work of art where BG2 is just a well rounded perfect game. Both are essential must plays though.

I blame all the BG2's spiritual successor hype on Dragon Age being a let down. I can't think of a single way besides graphics and voice acting (which aren't important to me) that dragon age was better at than BG2. Not to say Dragon Age was bad it's the best western RPG in a while but it jus was no BG2

Gothic 2 proved far too tough for me to enjoy. I still have the disc set, but I doubt I'll ever give it another try; I guess I didn't connect with the PC enough to care.

Edit: No, I never played the first Gothic nor anything afterward.
