Thieves Guild

Post by Ragin Cajun »

Looking for help here.

I've tried multiple times to rob a place. I'll steal an item, wait for the guard, go to jail and serve my time (by sleeping on the bed in prison).

According to the threads I searched here, it says you should get a messenger after you finish serving your time.

I've done this three or four times with no luck. Is there something I'm missing?

I'm wondering if I'm missing something! There is only one quest I'm aware of that requires you to go to prison to complete it, and it's not a thieves guild quest but a miscellaneous/optional quest in Bruma (Two Sides of the Coin).

I've completed the thieves guild quest line without ever going to jail, there is no thieves guild quest that requires being sent to prison.

According to multiple walkthroughs, there are two ways to "Join the Thieves Guild".
Spoiler
1. Steal something, get caught, go to jail, after being released from jail go to sleep somewhere, a messenger will give you an invitation to meet someone about the TG.

2. Find a poster of the Grey Fox in the Imperial City, read it, this adds "Gray Fox" to your dialogue options, talk to beggers, get their friendliness up with the game, ask about the Grey Fox, they will tell you to meet someone at midnight.
After trying #1 multiple times, I did #2 and it worked the first time. Walkthroughs are possibly incorrect for this and ONLY #2 works.

The first time I did the thieves' guild I got the invite from the dark elf chick after I had just finished serving a jail term.

I've never gone that rout, didn't even know it existed, the normal route via the poster and chatting up a beggar has always worked. If it's not working for you, then you've hit a bug. If, as you say, neither rout is working it is obviously a bug.

Obvious suspect is that a mod you're running is clashing with the thieves guild, try removing mods until you find the offender. Otherwise you may have to reinstall.

You could try using the console if you're playing on a PC,

setstage TG00FindtheThievesGuild 100

may do the trick.

Second option worked.

Only mod I'm running is Viconia. I want to install that Item Placement that Fable listed, just got to figure out where to go (in the game) to "buy it".
