This is why I played my main character as a rogue....GawainBS wrote:I'm always so pissed off when I encounter a chest that I can't open (in every game) because my Rogue lacks the skills. It feels like part of the game is denied to me.

Who said u can`t have both pets and stealth? My ranger archer has all the archery talents, all the ranger talents, and maxed stealth (while it isn`t that useful in a party, it helps to get rid of some goons that attack u every now and then, also i survived an ambush with the stealth, so it has its uses in parties tooScottg wrote:A Ranger ARCHER in a solo context is nearly useless. In fact a solo Rogue should focus on utilizing stealth to it's fullest - making special attacks from far away (Archer) and then hiding.
I didn't say that.cornoratu wrote:Who said u can`t have both pets and stealth? The context was Archer/Ranger *Solo*, and that it was *nearly* useless.
1. The Ranger utilizing a summon will limit a fair bit of stamina, thereby reducing the opportunity for a greater number of specialized attacks. (..assuming of course we aren't talking about Awakenings which has stamina potions.) The "work around" is getting out of the "field of combat" to where stamina can quickly replenish - it's tedious (doing it "again and again"), but it works.
2. When you have your summon with you you'll either have the summon attacked by opponents while you go into stealth, OR you'll tell it to stay-put (wait) while you plan-out/carry-out your first attack(s). Neither method is particularly useful. In the first case your opponents gang-up on your summon and kill it quickly. In the second case you have to "manually" get it to your battle location, which is tedious (..say to the point where you have very few enemies remaining).
3. You can't summon while Hiding, it "breaks" Stealth. Worse, it takes a long time to summon. (..and this of course is assuming you haven't already depleted your stamina.)
All of the above here relates to Aqua-chan's argument that a Rogue/Ranger SOLO is waste. What it does NOT show however is that SOLO use "translates" into a party-context; in that respect I would strongly disagree (with Aqua-chan's apparent reasoning). IMO the Ranger for a party is one of the strongest NON-Mage class/specializations available, better than Dualist, Assassin, and for the most part better than a Bard.
Note that NONE of the above references utilizing Stealth in a party context. In fact I've already commented that it can be quite useful (..with a Rogue that is a Ranger or not).
You misunderstood me. What I meant is that in some situations you can just forget about the pet and focus on the hit and run tactic using stealth and archery, and we both know it`s easier to stealth when the opponent is at range, so it`s somewhat better than using a melee type of rogue with stealth.Scottg wrote:I didn't say that.

And about the stamina thing, I think I already mentioned that my ranger has enough stamina to maintain pet+suppressing fire AND to use ALL of the archery special attacks. And since you can drop suppressing fire in a solo context, because it is mainly useless, you`ll have even more stamina. Although for the hit and run tactic I must admit that you`ll pretty much have to use Aim. But even when using Aim+pet, you should still have plenty of stamina left, because aim has a lower upkeep than suppressing fire.
