Been pretty close to 20 years. If a remake of the original game model has not been done by now, it never will be. They picked a decent studio to make it. The real question is, does the game market need yet another cookie cutter shoot aliens FPS? Hell, does the whole world need it?
So let's get ready for PreyDoomQuakeHalo(insert other FPS titles in here, I really do not care to list all of the franchises) it will be new and innovative, we promise!!![Roll Eyes ](./images/smilies/)

It's just a shame. Why use a landmark PC title for just another entry into a saturated genre? What a tragic waste of an opportunity.
There have been so many FPS's made, with most of them being bad. We've seen every conceivable weapon, every conceivable game mechanic, plot and cut scene gimmick. Why hasn't this genre died out a bit like RTS games did?
I know the studio has a good rep. But this is sacred territory for me. How would you like it if they made Planescape: Torment into a FPS???

..And this is why there shouldn't ever be a Baldurs Gate 3, Elder Scrolls 5 (or 4 for that matter) etc.
Absolute lack of innovativeness enlarges all the flaws that a game has (and every game has some) resulting in a weak production.
If however devs TRY to be innovative and fail (Like in Oblivion) then we face an absolute disaster.
Leave the classics alone!
(edit : I was refering to jklinders post)

Problem is, don't bother with slapping the X-com logo on it, and it will still be yet another alien shoot 'em up. While they should leave teh classics alone, we are seeing evidence that pure and simple, there are no new ideas being given green lights.

More like a pandemia unfortunately
Edit : And it's not true that there are no more ideas for good games.
Ever played Dungeon Keeper? One-of-a-kind game.
How awesome would be a DK with a third, Z axis? (there is Dwarf Fortress, but we aint talking about fan made games)
How about a fantasy turn-based strategy game (like age of wonders, disciples or Ho.. well, NOT like HoMM. Screw building 5 milion units per city per turn) with the addition of having a god damn choice of WHERE do you hit, with WHOM do you ally et cetera? With the ability to alter the campaign storyline.
Let's go a step further. RTS with a totaly non-linear campaign map (something like Dawn of War) but with Stronghold-like economy and building possibilities?
Multi player jagged alliance like game?
D&D themed MMO focused on PVP? (DDO has no pvp at all, therefore DDO is a pile of garbage)
Any god damn game focused on D&D dark elves, aka drow.
Strategy / RPG / FPS / Puzzle game about demons, souls etc. Be it from Greek Mythology, common beliefs or, once again, fantasy worlds like Dungeons and Dragons
And so on.. And so on..
No matter how badly would a game suck, with any of the above (and many more!), it would be at least noteworthy. The problem ain't ideas. The problem is, that companies prefer to release same-old-crap over and over again, instead of experimenting. This is ofcourse understandable, because failed experiments could be a huge hit to their wallets.. vaults... enormous piles of cash.
Edit 2 : There are ofcourse some games that don't require new ideas at all, like all the sports games on the world, but this causes these to never become HUGE titles, but will provide some income, if the graphics are better. Would you prefer to play FIFA 2007 or 2008? Final fantasy 619 or 620? (there are that many, yes. This is what happens when you close your eyes for more than a minute) erm.. excuse me.. since they used roman numbers DCXIX or DCXX?
In other words.. Have you ever bought the small gameboy-like consoles with "20 000 games" written on it, just to discover that these are 20 000 exactly the same games, with differend titles?
In 10 years, one will see PC dvd's with such titles. (Ofcourse EA will be the first one to release them. If someone played Warhammer Online from the beginning, till "The EA announcement", they will agree with me)
UNLESS games like Dwarf Fortress get to release point, and will show the (nowadays) ever lazy and ever greedy programists, that it CAN be done
Yhm.. Excuse the Offtopic, kind moderators, i just felt it was the right place

Never played dungeon keeper. For fantasy turn based, there was something close to it on the Sega Genesis and Saturn in the 90s. Shining Force1-3. All of them were excellent games and I would shed tears of joy if they were remade. Some RPG style stat building and equipping elements there.Linear, but very fun.
Want to talk about lazy game design, how about those yearly sports games releases. Some of them having recycled code going back to the early nineties.
But people will keep buying shooters even if they are just at heart re-skinned off each other. I have reached the point where I am tired of RTS's, I never liked the old point and click adventures.
There are some small developers still making innovative games, but you really have to be willing to put up with some big warts to see the beauty underneath. In this case I am referring to my current obsession Star Wolves 1-3. A space small unit strategy game where yuo are a small mercenary team of fighter pilots working freelance. Great fun, really needs polish.
BTW, I never said there were no new ideas. I said no new ideas were being given green lights. Big difference here. The independents don't count because they do not have million dollar budgets handed to them by a publisher.

This sounds absolutely ridiculous, until you realize there is a precedent for it. Dark Alliance, Fallout 3, and Alone in the Dark, anyone? Old names sell even if they're completely different and target a completely different demographic. In fact, it would probably be a good research question to find out why this is, because it makes no sense. One hypothesis could mention that Generic Alien Shooter wouldn't sell any units or make a splash, but calling it X-COM gets discussion even on RPG message boards. Gears of War 3 was recently announced, which IGN tells me is a huge deal, but what is the shooter that gets mentioned here? X-COM.
I was never a fan of X-COM so thankfully I am not affected by this rape, but I feel for you victims.

I will gladly accept your pity because I am still uber-pissed off about it. THANK YOU for it!!!endboss wrote:I was never a fan of X-COM so thankfully I am not affected by this rape, but I feel for you victims.
I actually played Dark Alliance *before* I played any of the BG games, otherwise there is no way I would have touched it.
I also refused to play Fallout 3 because it was drawing comparisons to Oblivion more than anything else and Oblivion is the biggest POS ever made (ok, not really but I despise what that game offers and represents)
I only played the original AitD way back in the day of my 386-33
What's next?
