RPG Doctor,

Post by Tricky »

I seem to get either extremely frustrated with designing the right kind of build for the ideal sort of gameplay (which of course NEVER works out and only serves to irritate my SO), or extremely bored playing RPG's with characters like 'the regular thief' or fighther that have zero percent metagaming effort in them, but allow one quickest, easiest access to just play and enjoy the damn game for what it is. D&D based games are a major culprit here, but there are others with game mechanics advanced enough to cause the same kind of allergic reation. I think part of the problem is that the challenge factor of creating an original build appeals to me, while not realizing (again) it's just about insurmountable.

For every time that I've completely finished an RPG, there are without exaggerating hundreds of times I created a character build and tossed it after getting bored or finding a flaw. RPG Doctor, what's going on here?

You're expecting too much depth from the game and the programming.

Character creation, is largely a function of your imagination. You're imagining the possibilities and the combinations.

But playing the creation (i.e. executing) is subject to a much narrower set of parameters than your imagination: the programming.

Dr. RPGguy prescribes pen and paper D&D with a DM who's imagination matches the scope of your own.

You mean this isn't normal behaviour? Oh, shhhh...oot, I'd better see the doctor after you've completed your appointment!

I am beginning to see it's bordering obsessive/compulsive in my case. ;)

I have a three year old copy of MotB that I barely even touched because I couldn't finish the OC of NWN2. Baldur's Gate, well I never really played through. I know everything there is to know about the near end of BG2:SToA, but I never finished and went on to ToB. Yes, I am ashamed of that. PS:T, I tend to create mages. But they start out so weak that it takes me forever to pre-play it, hunt some bandits, get some more spells to cast to get things started. Oblivion I finished maybe two or three times, but that was no big deal. I started out many characters though in search of some kind of non-generic character build. Which is, as anyone should know, impossible with that game. The list goes on.

These days I am (trying) to play NWN with the PRC community mod which adds a ton of feats and classes from the D&D PNP. It seems to be teaching me a lesson. The more possibilities I am presented with, the more I get attracted by playing increasingly impossible and aggravating builds. It's like some sort of mental sado-masochism. :P

I should quit RPGs entirely, but when I think of games in general I find nothing as interesting as a good RPG.

Methadone, anyone?

@RPGguy: I actually have my very first pnp game coming up in a few days. I'm nervous and excited.

This is where your OCD will really kick in. I'm new to PnP myself and was tasked with building an evil cleric. It took me 6 hours to study up and put the character together. No lie.

6 hours!!! It will probably take you 18

We seem to be going OT, so what the heck.

I'm putting together a summer nostalgia PnP campaign, 1st Edition up to and including Unearthed Arcana, with ye olde house rules. Two to three weeks of beach in the afternoon, AD&D all evening and night, sleeping in the mornings. A good time will be had by all!! haven't done this in years, and I can guarantee the first day or two will be character development before a die is rolled, well apart from those used in character creation that is.

your not the only one tricky

as for me I build daily two characters that will never see the light of day and I hate it :(

you know what could be fun to try make a balance character class ;)
that should keep your overly eager imagination on check for a while then youll get angry at the class putting it aside for a few days and on and on and on till you have your class then apply it to a character.

thats what im doing this internetless days :( (when im not doing homework)
Have you seen my brain around here? No? well in case you see it its brainy and squishy looking. If you see it let me know
