If the GOTY version doesn't have it...
I would recommend Broken Steel as an add-on
it raises the level cap from 20 to 30

That can't include Vegas. I hear there are some nifty modifications to the game in the next installment. Eating requirements, weighted bottle caps, that's what I've heard. Not really a mod, but it might be worth getting all the same.

It is. It's still in development.

I'm playing GOTY on pc now. Level 5 character. I was told it was ok to turn on all the DLC's except Broken Steel. Wait until your character is at least level 8-9 before turning it on. Don't know if its the right thing to do or not. I got this recommendation from NMA forum.
They turned me loose from the nervous hospital. Said I was well.

Wanderers edition makes the game a lot harder, but also incredibly fun. (ammo also has weight here)

Hhmmm, I'd rather not use a mod that changes so much on the first playthrough. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Well, what are you looking for in a mod then? Just cosmetic changes, or...?

For example, a mod like the various fixes for Alchemy in Morrowind: making certain aspects of the game more enjoyable, without altering the basic gameplay.
Another example: adding more weapons or armour is cool as well.
I'm not a big fan of mods that add "realism" by giving money a weight, or worse, add the requirement to eat. Maybe I'll try them later, but not for a first play.

One cannot skip Headshot damage increase. Which adds realism to the retarded fights after lvl 15, where both you and the enemies can endure an atomic drop (esp on highest difficulty)

Once you beat the game, replaying it with Marts Mutant Mod is a brand new experience! :) (combat oriented) wasteland is even more hostile, and with the worst options installed, you cannot hope to defeat ghouls without automatic weapons and 'nades

Watchthisyoutube vid for some more nice mods (actually, read its description for the mods, but watch the vid anyway to see how the game CAN look like) the bullet time effect is great. A nice alternative for Vats (it eats your AP, but slows the time)

GotY = Game of the Year, it includes all DLC, as explained earlier.

Thanks for the Headshot mod.

Ah yes, then i have GoTy aswell. Its just the shortcut that confussed me.

As for the video, the mods are listed in the credits. DC patrols is worth installing, as it also adds realism. There are tons of cosmetic mods, but these require a fast PC to run. (fallout3nexus is the place where you can find all these)

Once you get to Broken Steel and Point Lookout, i assure you, that you will want these :

For point lookout (removes the unavoidable bonus damage for those awfully scaled enemies)

For Broken Steel (also removes unavoidable bonus damage)

You might want to remove this two after you reach a high level, but beign one hitted by a naked guy with a stick isn't funny NOR realistic. Esp when the same naked guy takes 3 point-blank headshots with a shotgun to be brought down. That is how Point Lookout looks like ^^

(naked as in having no armor, just some regular dirty clothing)

Regards

Thanks. The only DC patrol mod I found was the one with the Brotherhood of Steel. Is that the one you mean?

Are all the steps described in the readme necessary to install this mod? Because frankly, the amount of work is a lot, with all the unpacking, installing of extra programs, and even extra downloading (apart from the mp3’s). It’s not even clear WHAT you have to download, because it can’t be easily found on FO3 Nexus...

At the moment, I have the esm-file extracted, and the mp3's as well. In just a few hours of playing, I've noted several tracks coming back, so I guess it wasn't enough.

For some reason there isn't a sticky for mod recommendations in this forum so I guess I'll use this thread.

Mods I'm using for my second run through:

Falout Script Extender - unavoidable, and seems to work just as wellas MWSE and OBSE

Fallout Mod Manager - Ditto, although I don't find it quite as user friendly in use as Oblivion Mod Manager, haven't sussed out if there's a BSA extractor for one thing.

CRAFT - Modders tool, necessary for other mods I'm running

RobCo Certified - having fun with this mod, although as with any companion there is the frustration of the *ers jumping in front of you just as you shoot/swing. At least they don't object and you can repair them after you destroy them!

Scavenger Wasteland- A house mod with some scavenging quests, working well so far too.

I didn't bother with FWE as I don't want to turn the game into even more of a FPS than it is already. Obviously, from the popularity of that mod the game has attracted a lot of Shooter fans.
