Guards killing me?
OK...Hadn't had this happen before..I assumed the stuff laying around town in boxes, crates and loose were "for the taking". Hadn't had an issue before. Just picked up a cheap plain basket. Heard the cry for the guards go out. I ran to the trader in Balmora, sold what I could...didn't see the basket in my possession. Saw a guard running at me, checked and I had a 2g bounty. He killed me.. huh? Over a 2g bounty? Didn't even ask if I surrendered or not.
If it happened just this once, then it is just a bug. Guards -always- start a dialogue, even if its just "For your crimes you're sentenced to death. May gods have mercy on you"
And since i do not remember any baskets in Balmora beign considered artifacts, a bug for sure!
(i mean the fact that he did not talk with you, not the bounty. Stealing is bad mmmkay?)

Bring up your console, click on the guard and type "forcegreeting"
That should let you pay your bounty.
What mods are you running?

The console command doesn't work for me..something about a remote control plugin or something that PC's have. I don't want to unplug anything inside the box and mess it up..lol.
Running real signposts.
The magicka regeneration mod.
That's it so far. But it has already created an issue. Everytime I start the game I get errors that something can't find something else. I can hit yes to still load up and play with no problems..well except the guards killing me when I steal a basket..lol.

Make sure you have the masters (Tribunal, Bloodmoon) installed; always a good idea to install them anyway, along with the Bloodmoon patch. Note thaty if you install Tribunal and Bloodmoon then the Bloodmoon patch is the only one you need to install, apart from the Morrowind Code Patch.
Install the construction set if you haven't already.
Load the mods into the CS, then immediately save them, this should reconnect them to the appropriate master.
If the loading error message is not sorted by the above, then you probably have some meshes or textures installed in the wrong folder(s); check the readme's and try reinstalling. I would suspect the Signpost mod rather than the magicka regen one if it's a mesh/texture problem. Frankly I've never understood why anyone bother with what to me is a completely redundant mod, I'd suggest de-selecting that one and seeing if the problem persists before doing anything else.

I'll try deselecting it. I did move it in manually as suggested in several places. It's actually the only one of the two that had any secondary files. The magicka regen only had the one data file.
I don't have the Tribunal or Bloodmoon expansions. Just the vanilla Morrowind and the Construction set that installed at the same time as the MW install.
(edit) Just opened MW launcher to deselect signposts: on the side it shows this:
Morrowind.esm is required for this file to be loaded, and it has been changed more recently than this file. You might experience problems with the game.
I have Morrowind.esm. Not sure what changed to it. I am still getting a DataHandler exception which is one of the two errors I got before. Guess the other was related to the signposts. They did show up in game though...
This is what appeared in the warnings text:
Unknown SSCR_ID in ConstructObject.
DataHandler: unrecognized form
Look in the Warnings.txt file for more info.
Texture "Textures\_land_default.tga" count 3.
Texture "Textures\menu_thick_border_bottom_right_corner.dds" count 2.

I strongly recommend that you obtain Tribunal and Bloodmoon if you can, many of the mods, especially the better ones, require Tribunal at least*.
Whatever you do, make sure you have the latest available patch installed, the game is very unstable without it.
* I believe the Code Patch is one that requires having Tribunal.
