Damage Per Second

Post by VladTepes »

Hi!

I am new to the game but I am used to play online RP (e g NWN). "DPS" is new to me. I can not seem to find information on the weapon about speed, just damage.

Can someone please explain DPS and how it is calculated. Please assume that my experience of the game is zipp, zero, nada :)

Damage per second is a method of calculating the damage a weapon will do over time. So instead of looking at a weapon that does 2 points of damage but only swings once per second, you see a 2 DPS.
Then you can compare it to a weapon which does 1 point of damage, but allows you to swing twice per second, thus also giving you a 2 DPS.
So when looking at just the damage score you see 2 versus 1, but over time both will do 2 damage per second :)

So basically - it is what it says - damage per seconds :)

Hope it helps.

Hi!

Where does it say 2/1? I am so sorry, but I fail to see this. My dagger is just showing that it makes 4 points of damage and has a critical chance of 3 percent. Please, where is the 2/1 info?

When I study how much my daggers inflicts, I see that it is 7/7. Probably I have a strenght bonus (STR = 11)?

Many, many thanks!

The 2 and 1 were just made up to illustrate how DPS is used to compare versus actual numbers.

Your dagger does 7.7 damage per second. This is an information to you instead of writing it does X amount of damage with a swing time of Y to enable you to compare weapons across different types without having to know the exact values.

So, it means that if I get a larger weapon which does, let us say, 6 points of damage, it is not sure that my DPS will increase when equipping it?

Interesting, all other games I have played have always been based that given that you are proficient with a weapon it dies the actual damage indicated when studying the facts, regardless of user.

Again, thanks my Danish friend!

Indeed. If your weapon is slow - then "6 points of damage" might not be better then a fast weapon with a little less damage per swing when looking just at the damage per second.

It is a terminology used very often in the MMORPG genre for example - where DA:O have drawn some inspiration from.

Bigger ain't always better. In DA, a dual wielding rogue can dish out plenty of death and destruction due to the sheer attack speed of daggers and the ability of a properly positioned rogue to backstab his/her target.

Many thanks for your kind replies.

I have other questions which I might create individual topics for :)
