Wanted to see what PCs some of you have enjoyed taking all the way through all 4 games.
Now that I have BG 1 (w/ToSC) to go with BG 2 (w/ToB). I plan to take my 1st BG 1 character all the way through. It is an elven fighter/mage. I am finishing Ulgoth's Beard and just have the final part of the original (trip to Candlekeep and Return to BG left.
I have already hit the XP cap and my PC is 7th/7th in levels. I used all buff books except wisdom on my character. Will any of my equipment carry across? I am not really worried as good equipment comes quickly in BG2. But I do want to try the "pantaloons" this time. I also have a spell "wraithform" that I have never seen in BG2. Will it carry over?
I have started a second game with a Paladin but notice that none of the "kits" seem to exist. I wanted him to be an "Undead Hunter". Gotta love that level drain.
The pantaloons will carry over, as well as some of your equipment, which you will find throughout the game. There is an exploit which you can use to keep all of your items.
As far as I know, Wraithform is not a legal spell. Rather, it is in the game, yes, but you can't get it legally. You will be forced to re-pick your spells at the start of the game, which will give you access to the new Baldur's Gate II spells as well. Wraithform will not carry over.
Once you finish Baldur's Gate II and import him into Baldur's Gate II, you will be able to choose a new kit.

While there isn't much Level Drain in BG1, may I strongly suggest BGTutu? It allows you to play BG1 in the BG2 engine, so you can get kits, the TAB highlight feature, faster walking speed, etc.

I wholeheartedly second Ode to a Grasshoppers recommendation. Having played Tutu I will never again play vanilla (unmodified) BG1.
I take almost every character through both games. There are so many excellent mods about I can play with new material in all four sections so I never get bored.
Tutu makes running a solo character much more feasible. I've taken a half elven fighter/mage/thief through all the games.
I personally like running through the original game more, instead of using mods. The gameplay of a solo character is largely unchanged, except for thieves who would need to split their points in TuTu, instead of investing it all in one skill.
There's a switch in mechanics, yes, but I just like the interface of the original more. That and I like playing games in their original state.

I "usually" tend to fall more in the same school as Crenshinibon. I definitely want to finish BG 1 a couple of times as is. But there is certainly a strong appeal to some of the Tutu features mentioned. Next question would be what would happen to any saved games already in play if I install Tutu? Would it mess them up? Should they be deleted?? I will definitely finish the 2 characters I already have started before installing Tutu (if I do actually opt for that) but was curious.

IIRC there's an option in the Tweakpack that lets you keep the BG1 style interface. I used to feel the same re. games in their original state, but after playing a Tweaked Tutu with the BG1 NPC Banter Pack and level 1 NPCs (a male human CN Blade PC, Imoen as a Swashbuckler/Mage, Minsc the Barbarian, Dynaheir as a Conjurer 'cos Sleep is too awesome to miss out on, Khalid the hen-pecked Berserker, and Jaheira as per usual) just couldn't go back to the slow walking speeds and silent NPCs of Vanilla BG1.

Not sure on the saved games count - look through here.

I have played TuTu before, with the interface tweak (back when my Windows XP for some reason couldn't run the original Baldur's Gate).
The thing is, if you want to dual class, your class/level combination will be valid for the first game, but you'll want a different combination for the second game. There's also an issue of balance - some characters are too weak, like monks, and others are too strong, like Shapechangers.
It's fun, but I only recommend it after you've played Baldur's Gate multiple times, to enhance, as well as refresh your experience.

I agree with Cren. Play the game at least the first time in vanilla mode. Save the mods for refreshing subsequent runs thru the game. First see the game that the developers wanted you to see.
I played thru the whole saga only once (I have yet to cast a real-life Time Stop spell). I ran a single-class human Cleric thru BG1/TotSC, and exported him as a Priest of Lathander in SoA/ToB. I used Imoen, Jahiera & Khalid, and Minsc & Dynaheir thru the first game. I used Jahiera, Minsc, Aerie, Keldorn and Imoen (Yoshimo) in SoA. I replaced Aerie with You-Know-Who in ToB.
Why is it that whenever I finally get around to playing a new game for the first time,
I feel like playing Baldur's Gate for the second time...
I have been enjoying the "vanilla" BG1. Have played BG2 several times vanilla, in fact I haven't even tried a mod of it yet.
I still keep thinking of things I want to try without mods.
I finished my elven fighter/mage several days ago and imported him into BGII. Have been thoroughly enjoying it. Other than the Pantaloons, so far, I have only found my +3 chain from BGI (got that off of Illyitch versus the "Mail of the Dead"). But I still lurking about Athkathla at the moment. I also now understand SO much more of the dialog and odd little encounters in BGII. Running into Garrick outside the "Most Radiant Heart" for example.
One oddity I encountered and have just go ahead with it, involved the new hit points total after importing. In BGI my character who was multiclassed bumped his "Con" up to 18 by using the "Tomes". So he had a good number of hit points by the game's end. But after importing into BGII, his hit points mushroomed. It "looks" like BGII gave him max HP for all his fighter levels w/con and then added all the mage levels w/con to boot.
Wonder if this was because he was multiclass. My next BGI character is a single class Paladin, so I guess that will tell me if that was the case.
