Visual Mods

Post by Ares2382 »

Hi guys,

Thinking of booting up BG2 + ToB back up after a long break. But I've been spoiled by some of the newer pretty games.

Looking to see if there are mods out there that improve visuals in anyway, or at the very least increase the game's resolution. My current max resolution for my monitor is 1920 X 1080

There's a widescreen mod at Gibberlings3. As for trying to pretty up the game like they did for, lets say Oblivion and Fallout 3 with their various beautification mods, well there's not much you can do with a 2D game and a lot of stuff is hard coded into the game so you can't really make changes.

Oblivion? HA!! ...you're off by one generation - the granddaddy and undisputed champion recipient of beautification mods is Morrowind - which, properly modded, manages to pull off what's still the best graphics on PC, and what's more mindboggling, @ a significantly lower polygon count than the unmodded original release...

But you're right, unfortunately, that sort of stuff only really works on a decently efficient yet simple 3d engine... With BG, on the other hand, short of redrawing every single background bitmap or simply quadrupling background pixel counts and redoing every creature animation in HD... - WAIT, THAT'S ACTUALLY POSSIBLE *AND* QUITE STRAIGHTFORWARD... hmmm

PS as to the widescreen mod - that thing suffers from inability to do nonstandard or sub-480p resolutions @ fullscreen. On a laptop, for example, 640by400 (1:2 direct pixel upscaling to 1280x800, perfect quality) would be great, while the mod-permitted and workable 1280x800 itself is painfully tiny on 13" of laptop LCD. In fact, every resolution that doesn't require image distortion that looks funky on LCD (i.e., native, cause the more logical half-values of 640by400, 840by540, 960by540, or 960by600 aren't Windows standard fullscreen-enabled resolutions) is unworkably tiny on all but the most obscenely HUGE screens (I play on 50'' - yes, fifty inch! - tv-as-monitor, and still find myself wanting to mess around with the fonts to make them a little bigger in 1360x768). Sure, it'd look fine on CRT in standard resolutions, but who the hell has CRTs these days, especially WIDESCREEN CRTs!??
