The Lower Reaches

I am at the entrance to the pit in the cult of the unseeing eye but I can't get to the lower reaches. I have the rod from the rift area, how do I get to the lower reaches?

The Gamebanshee walkthrough map has a little thing annotating where the entrance is. Baldur's Gate II @ GameBanshee

I know, I am there at the entrance but it won't let me enter.

Pit of the faithless

Not the lower reaches but the pit of the faithless, sorry my mistake. I accidentally killed that guy who left the cult when I was fighting the lich. Is there anyway around that.

After you got the first half of the rod, did you talk to the old man by the sarcophagus again? What's-his-name, he should tell you what to do next.
