HELP! The VPK tool confuses me!

I recently decided that I wanted to learn how to reskin my characters. Long story short, I have no idea how to work the VPK tool I downloaded. I'm not even sure I downloaded the right one. Can anybody help me?

Downloading the "Packfile Explorer" might also help, as it lets you look up what pack file a texture is in, along with seeing them visually(as in giving you a preview of the texture) - Here: Files : Planet Vampire : Carpe Noctem Kins!
