HOTU: Assassin strategy (possible spoilers)

Post by rikucha »

Hi all!

After a long time I decided to play HOTU single player again, but this time with assassin type build which depends on stealth and death attack. Previously I played with a cleric character which was quite easy (Harm/Heal etc.)
My question is: how do you beat the bosses (dracolich, Maker, Aghaaz and others) which have (at least, most of them) the true seeing so they spot me automatically? An assassin which cannot hide is a dead assassin :(

Solo.. I'd up the Use Magic Device skill so I can use wands that summon stuff and wands that allow for ranged attacks. Bows may be an option too. If you don't mind to cheat a little, while using ranged attack I found all sorts of dead spots where I was able to either stay out of sight and 'hit around the corner' with an AOA spell, or 'lock' the creature in place by walking past a poorly noded corner of a brigde or something else. *gasp long sentence*

Nearly all maps have such points that you can exploit. The dual dragon room and the Half dragon/balor area are notable exceptions. I am not sure how I got past that last time, but I was playing NWN with the PRC so I probably had some kind of fancy class ability that I was able to exploit.

Edit: Ah, just remebered something. If you go up against dragons, getting in range of their breath weapon and then running away before they can kill you help clear some distance between them. The animation delay for the breath weapon is long enough to get away from them and cast a few spells of your own. Via wands of course.

Thanks!
Maybe I should invest some points in craft trap skill and use them?

(Minor note: I failed to read this was about HotU the first time, hence the talk about the dual dragons room. I'm sure the rest of it is still valid for the expansions.)

Hm, you'd actually need a chance to set traps. A lot of these epic battles are the same way.. you get thrown into them. No chance to rig the place up a little. Otherwise, yeah. But not a little. The better the DC of a trap you set, the higher the higher the chance their own reflex saves won't be enough for it. It depends a little bit on the boss characters, but most of them will have high dexterity.
