I was looking at WP's in staff for the head druids staff and points in spears.
But are they worth it?

No, they're not. I would suggest that you specialize in Scimitars. Personally, I only use staves for their abilities, but never really fight with them.
“The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially.”
If you do this for roleplaying reasons it's ok.
Ranged attack power is more useful and the lucky scimitar is more powerful than the 2-handers you'll find during the first 5 chapters and allows wearing a shield, the staves aren't very damaging and and you'll have to wait until chapter 6 to get the spear+5, but you'll be able to hurt everything and have a long melee range.
