When the past - part one

I look around searching for any live threats still under the heavy pressure of the battle. Seeing that nothing seems endangering us at this moment I relax a bit and check my wounds,
"We should get moving now. I could use some patching since I rather prefer not to get infected by these damn undead creatures. Judging from their transformation it looks to me like some sort of strange disease."

Meliss nods "Fortunately we will be in Crossguard tomorrow, so any traces of diseases can be taken care of by this guy I know there, we will have to stay calm for the day anyways, so no problems. You might want to close the wounds for now though"

I take a closer inspection at my thigh (clean any obvious leftovers of the undead wolf and wash the wound with boiled water) and then head to bed to recover my strength.
Out of game: There is a special procedure to patch my wounds I am unaware of? We don't have any cleric for some healing.

The glass layer starts to show a golden writing as it is exposes to the sunlight, and this is the text you can read:
"
Up is adding, down is removing, middle neutral: Switch |1: 2. |2: 4. |3: 8. |4: 16. And so on.
A village one year had 20, the next reduced to 4, Then people came moving to mine there and there was 50 more, then after that the population doubled, followed by the death of 8. Then came starvation and hunger, and one in four entered deaths fields. Lastly a man got slaughtered for stealing a dwarfs mead. During this time a necromancer collected and reanimated the corpses of the dead, how many minions does he have today?

finally were back in business!

so let me get this straight...
we start with 20 then lose 16 and end up with 4 then add 50 people then double the population then lose 8 so we have 100 then 1 out of 4 dies which leaves us 75 and then another guy dies, 74. so i'd say the necromancer has about 16+8+25+1= 50 minions?
so i guess i take down the 4th level (-16) once then take the 6th lever up once (+64) then the 4th lever middle and down again (-16) and then the 1st lever up (+2) then pull the 6th lever middle and up again (+64) and the 1st lever down and middle 5 times (-10) then the 3rd lever down (-8) then the 4th lever middle and down (-16) then 1st lever middle and down 5 times (-10) and then the 1st lever middle and up 25 times
before i do this is consult my companions " It seems there are many ways to reach the numbers drawn from the riddle, i am also not sure if i should add the 20 first or consider as if i already have them since it says it starts with 20, what do you lads suggest, shall i just try this way? there might be a default mechanism in case i am wrong and the contents might be corrupted...)

(by the way, as it seems to be, one position equals one number, so number one down will always be -2, no matter how many times you do it. The whole thing is based on having each lever set to a position, then turning the lid.)

I scratch my chin... "I'm sorry mathematics isn't my strong point" I say somewhat shyly "Father never taught me much of the ways of numbers, but I'd say your calculation is about right"

I raise my shoulders looking clueless,
"They don't train much logic in the military. I put my confidence in your evaluation though. The only thing that worries me is the necromancer reference."

Oh i thought we need to like sum the levers up or down according to the story.. however if they just need to be in a certain position... basically the only question mentioned there which i can answer in the riddle is how many minions does he have = 50? if so then i'll try moving the 1st, 4th and 5th levers up and leaving the others in the middle, and try to open the lid, if that doesnt work i'll take the 8th lever up the 7th down the 6th down the 5th down the 4th up the 3rd down the 2nd up and the 1st up if that doesnt work i'll try the opposite as in the 8th down the 7th up and so on..
this of course are the ways i currently came up with as to reach 50 for an answer... assuming this is what and how we want
