Sorry, if this is a stupid question, but I can't figure out how to access my NPCs' inventory. I want to be able to trade out weapons, and have Ian disarm himself so we can talk to some raiders... but I just can't figure it out. Please help.

Use pickpocket and barter to access NPC inventory in Fallout. If you want him to switch weapons give him a better one or take away his ammo so he has to unequip the current one so you can take it. Don't give him a knife or other melee weapon, he might equip it and forget that he can use pistols instead.
It doesn't matter if your party members have readied weapons, people won't get hostile because of this (unlike in FO2).
