Muay Thai Character??

Post by heroclincher »

Hey, Everyone!

I'm new here AND new to D&D...

I'm supposed to make up a character for myself before my first game (with a group in San Diego) by the end of this month. My friends can't help me because they're 400 miles away and they're stupid about the Internet.

I wanted to make a character based on Muay Thai...

Kings Cup Promos 30 - Dedicated To The World Of Muay Thai.

See how those guys fight? It's so bad ass!! Is there any way I can incorporate those moves into my character?

Play a Monk. Hit with fists and feet. It doesn't matter about the flavour text, because you're using unarmed attacks. If you want to do chokes etc. Use grapple. Trip for trip, etc. Just master your combat maneuvers and have a good Int for using them. Take Improved Grapple asap.

Which books can you use? If you're not limited to the PHB, ignoring Monk is one of the best things you can do to build an effective unarmed fighter. The Unarmed Swordsage variant from Tome of Battle is an easy to use and quite effective brawler.

Straight-up Monks suffer from having to use a lot of ability scores. (STR for damage and attack, DEX for AC and certain skills, CON for HP, INT for expanding the skill list, WIS for AC and abilities). Your unarmed attack can't be enhanced with weapon upgrades and you'd need a Wizard, Druid or Cleric to cast Greater Magic Weapon/Fang on you to get a +5 to hit and damage. (Which the game assumes you have around lvl 17. The opponents AC are made with that in mind.) Monks aren't that great at tripping and grappling either, because they only have +15 BAB, and their STR suffers from having to spread ability scores.
If you select the right bonus feats, you don't need 13+ INT for getting Combat Expertise and thus Improved Trip & Disarm.

If you're not into learning/using extra books, consider Pathfinder. It's free, and it fixes some faults of 3.5. (By far not all of them). Monks there are a tad better off.
