Final battle vs Malak!

Post by mistered »

Tough fight. As a scoundrel/consular I don't have any spell that could really hurt him. Force wave throws him away, stasis has no effect. And unfortunately, my character doesn't have a strong melee. But at the end, I defeated him by throwing 3 cryoban grenades + 7-10 thermal detonators. The game is good but ending with grenades is not what I expect.

It's like most things mistered (reminds me of ye olde sitcom I used to love when I was a kid!) it's hard as hell until you figure it out, and then it's so easy you can't understand why you struggled the first time around.

Spoiler (highlight to read)
Spoiler
The 'trick' is to be really good with light sabres, have plenty of life support/med packs and zap those tanks with Drain Life before he can. Lightning also works well on Malak.

I once ended the game with a constitution based Scout/Consular build. It was fairly anticlimatic -- I ended up killing him with endless force waves, and eventually he keeled over after I smacked him around with it enough.

I figured since I wasn't good at a lightsaber, I'd just smack him around with the force. It was surprisingly effective. He has some good abilities of his own and not bad stats (especially if he manages to give himself a force buff or two, which aren't too hard to break with a consular) but once you begin force waving him it's pretty much over.

I basically had him against a wall and just hit the same button over and over again. Was totally different than my first time through, where I was a soldier/guardian dual wielding and I ended up fighting an epic lightsaber fight across the room.

Usually by the end of the game most of us have a few cryoban grenades and thermal detonators. We always keep saving them just in case and then we never actually use them. It's always fun looking back at save games -- looking through my hordes and hordes of unused items and going "man, I should have sold some of these!"

That's surprising. Force wave can kill Malak. What else?

As I remember you can easily win every fight in Kotor 1-2 with just spamming force wave(jedi) or lightning storm(sith). All the fights are to easy and you need just 1 of those 2 spells for every fight(after a certain level) nothing else.

I played always just jedi consulars with jedi master or sith lord prestige class but my sister finished the game as jedi guardian without problems(she had enough force points to spam 1 of the 2 spells).

And from my experience, force wave only throw him away and hurt him very little. Toward the end, it even has no effect on him. But I agree with Fear (?) that lightning is more of an offense vs Malak.

sometimes if I am feeling lazy, I'll just set a bunch of mines all down the walk way, before approaching Malak... then I just have to get through the first fight, run around draining all the tanks, once I drain them all, I head down the walk way back to the doors... he follows and hits all the mines, from there a few hits takes him right out..... lol

no, I don't do this every time... I've beat him normally my first few times

but, yes, good saber skills, an a lot of med paks (a lot of med paks)... force powers, I've never found very effective on him (force defenses on the other hand, force immunity, force breach,...ect, diff help)
then again I usually play on the light side... maybe darkside powers are more effective...

Malak has Sentinel-like immunities against most force powers.

There is another cheese tactic involving the Force Plague. It has a DC of 100, making it impossible to save against. It effectively makes it the most powerful force power. Aside from eating away at his health it has the added bonus of slowing Malak down, allowing you to set some mines that knock him back.

This will tactic will get him every single time.

But as always - if the game is "too easy" when using those 1 or 2 spells, it is a simple matter that the player do not use those spells if wanting more challenge.
