Ring of Wizardry
Ring of Wizardry
Hey all,
Well on my way to soloing the game for the first time. Big thanks to all who helped me out, character is getting pretty kick ass.
Target equipment im going for,
Neck: Amulet of Power (Shadow Thieves Guildhall)
Chest: Robe of Vecna (Adventurer's Mart)
Ring 1: Ring of Gaxx (Docks Basement Chain)
Ring 2: Ring of Wizardry (?? See below)
Boots: Boots of Speed (Astral Prison, Haer'Dalis Quest Chain)
Waist: Belt of Inertial Barrier (Trademeet)
Back: Cloak of Displacement (Trademeet)
Mainhand: Celestial Fury (Koshi in Guarded Compound)
Offhand: Dak’Kron’s Zerth Blade (Adventurer's Mart)
Think this is pretty much best item combo for Kensai Mage... I actually cant remember if I can even wear boots or not, guess I will find out when I hit the Astral Prison.
Anyway getting off topic. I cant seem to track down information on obtaining the Ring of Wizardry... According to most descriptions, Nadinal in the harper hold drops it... But only after Jaheira "brings you back to the hold"... What?
Anyone know whats up with this item?

If i recall correctly, you get it from students after planar sphere quest (you can ask them to make it) OR after you wipe out Jaheira's harper friends. One of the two
edit : Yes, Nardinal. You have to have Jaheira with you for some time, until a harper pops by and takes her away from you. Jaheira returns after some time, asking you to come to harper hold with her. There you will wipe out her friends to get the ring.

Excuse me if this confuses you, but I play a polish version of the game so item names don't tell me much. However, I think I can explain anyway.
Spoilers ahead:
There are two different rings in the game that give you additional mage spell slots. One is obtained after finishing the Planar Sphere quest, and it gives bonus slots for spell levels 2 ,3 and 4.
The other - and this, I think, is called "ring of wizardry" - is found at the body of the Harper Mage that attacks you together with Galvarey and other harpers at your "trial". This is all a part of "Jaheira and the Harpers' hold quest", a sequence of events that is long and only possible to participate in if you have Jaheira in your party. During the quest she will leave and come back (twice, I think), and at the end she'll ask you to accompany her to the Harpers. That's where you get the ring.
Does this help?
(Edit : got spell levels wrong)

The ring that the students make is not the ring of wizardry. I think that it is called the ring of acuity.Novos wrote:Thank you both that helped alot! I guess Im just going to have to wait for the students at the sphere to make it... As I am soloing the game and even if I weren't I absolutely despise Jaheira.
Thanks a bunch everyone!

To get the ring of wizardry, you have to have Jahiera in the party. (Unless you import it from BG1)
From the walk through on this very site:
Ring of Wizardry (RING08)
Location(s)
Docks District (Harper Headquarters) - Loot from one of the harpers that attacks you when Jaheira brings you back
Planar Sphere - Created for you by your apprentices (if you own the stronghold)
Ring of Acuity (RING40)
Location(s)
Slums District - Loot from Lavok after completing the Planar Sphere
If you have the Item Upgrade mod, and you really should, Cromwell can combine the two.

So the Ring of Acuity would be the one giving bonus spells 2, 3 and 4, (not like I posted earlier, sorry) while Ring of Wizardry gives bonus slots for 5, 6, 7.
Wasn't there some problem with the students' making it, though? I don't really remember anymore, but I think they only succeed with making it if you chose specific items for the earlier tasks?

If they make the ring at least one of the apprentices dies, so you fail in your task for the Cowled Wizards, not to mention having innocent blood on your hands.QuenGalad wrote:So the Ring of Acuity would be the one giving bonus spells 2, 3 and 4, (not like I posted earlier, sorry) while Ring of Wizardry gives bonus slots for 5, 6, 7.

Thanks for all the help people. Im really starting to come along with the character. When I started this solo journey I couldnt take out one mob, yesterday I soloed the cowled enforcers at half health... was pretty kickass. Love killing those dudes.
Quick question, I tried to do one of the liches' for the kangaxx chain. On my way out of handing the cult of the unseeing eye a platter full of their ass with all the trimmings I decided I might as well.
Long story short, I couldn't take on the liche... His mislead was really screwing me up. By the time I killed the decoy, he would cast some instant death spell on me after time stop and that would be the end of it. One time I almost took him, but then he mazed me which ended the game... Which I though was incredibly stupid considering my character has 18 int and only would have been in the maze for a short period of time. That was a piss off.
Any advice on soloing liches via Kensai-Mage?
Thanks again
- Rob
Daystar sword, mace of disruption +2, scroll of protection from magic. <-- 3 cheesy ways to OWN liches. Daystar does wonders on the shadow one. Spell of protection from undead helps too. And if you play vanilla-BG, even protection from evil.
I however prefer an all-out spell duel, especialy when you fight more than one lich at a time.. With scsii they're quite smart.

Yes, that's one of the most annoying aspects of soloing the game. Imprisonment of the character ends it whether you have a party or not, but if you solo, maze and charm (!) end the game too. I remember finding that out and thinking "What, the mage ordered me to commit suicide?"Novos wrote: One time I almost took him, but then he mazed me which ended the game... There was a work-around for maze and imprisonment. One of mods removed the stupid (because it is stupid) game over caused by these spells.

Stupid for maze, but not for imprisonment if you're soloing the game. The simple answer is to buy some protection from undead(which is what I think Stworca was referring to when he said protection from magic), cheesy is a matter of opinion, but when being used against a super cheesy monster like Kangax, with all the bugs associated with him, what's the problem?
By the way, if you do use PfU against Kangax when you are solo you will be very likely to run into one of the bugs mentioned. If Kangax can't affect someone (it could be a summoning of course) you get the 'can't activate script' bug, and he can't be killed. He just stands there on near death and nothing will affect him.
Bioware love using dialogue to trigger scripts, they've never got it through there thick heads that it's a very bad idea! You make a critical script dependent on dialogue, then you allow casters to us Silence 15' Radius or allow other ways to prevent dialogue; dummies!!!
Of course you always have the option of leaving Kangax alone, he and his evil ring are far from essential, in fact the ring itself has been called extra strong cheddar with mozzarella on top!*
* But not by me, if you can get it by fair means or foul (alignment permitting) why not. There is at least one Paladin who will refuse to have anything to do with the ring because of it's evilness, maybe she's right, your call.
PS I just realised Stworca did mean protection from Magic, I'd forgotten that had the bonus of no triggering the Kangax bug; apologies Stworca. I still don't think it's cheesy in this context though.

In my experience, if you cast Protection From Undead on your character and then summon Kangaxx, he won't initiate dialog, so, you can hit him until he's "Neard Death" and then talk to him, which should trigger the script.
Alternatively, you could steal the Ring of Gaxx from him twice.

Do you mean Mazzy? I've never heard any of the NPCs make any remarks in regards to this quest at all. What exactly does she say?
“The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially.”

@ST: Agreed. I definitely prefer spell duels. I just haven't learned everything I need to know yet as far as certain counterspells go. I have ToB installed, will protection from evil still be helpful?
@Quen: haha I was confused as all hell when I happened to me.
@Gal: hehe, by virtue of the fat that this is my first solo run, I have no problem cheesing the hell out of him
@Cren: I read about that exploit. Gonna do this run without any of that though.
This protection from undead you're all talking about, is this a mage spell? Can I learn it when I find the scroll or is it one of those green ones?
