Money or political pressure, or both. Assange certainly seems to have been arrested on a trumped up charge - the only thing, seemingly, that anyone had on him being that previously dismissed rape case. The US is struggling to find something they can get him extradited for. If Wikileaks info was really 'illegal', surely they'd have used it as an excuse to get their sticky little fingers on him?
Personally, I find it rather scary that one insignificant man can be hounded by (apparently) the whole world just for taking 'the right to freedom of speech/information' literally. I thought it was only dictatorships that acted like that. Guess I'm more naive than I thought I was.
All the more reason not to trust our beloved leaders, huh?

The lawyer in the case defending the two woman said that the case is separate from Wikileaks and that the public should avoid drawing conclusions of the two women as such. Take that as you will. If these charges are legitimate, I feel sorry for what those two women must be going through -- the court of public opinion is a bastard to have to go through.
In addition, quite a few people have jumped ship from WikiLeaks. This isn't something new -- apparently the site they constructed had been being built for a while due to problems with Assange acting like a dictator, including potentially what WikiLeaks would release in recent months/years. They state the aim is to provide an actual, open whistleblower site. So I guess support for him was not as firm as we all thought, including from those who actually were a part of the WikiLeaks project, and it has not been for some time...
Finally, it turns out that WikiLeaks vindicated Bush. Turns out that Iraq did have yellow cake uranium and was going out of their way to find more, once the heat was off. In other words, Iraq did have or was creating MWDs, as the British government said. It's a bit funny that on top of that, and on top of the beginnings of a potential nuclear deal of some sort between Vietnam and the US which was underpublicized but no doubt angered the Chinese a few months back, we've also now got proof coming out of a nuclear deal between North Korea and Burma (a despotic military ruled nation which refused international aid during a natural disaster to save face, and instead let it's people suffer, amongst various other atrocities).
On top of that, apparently there are plans in place for the British to get rid of the Royals. Also, something about the Pope, and the status of Turkey in the EU (being, get Turkey out of the EU... which is not exactly an unpopular position anyways). On top of that, we learned that the Vatican forced witnesses not to testify on child molestation cases.
And, of course, various DNS attacks from pro- and anti-wikileak activists. Amongst a few dozen other interesting tidbits lately, including the Kremlin recommending Assange getting the Nobel Peace Prize. Am I the only one sitting here wondering what would happen if Wikileaks has gone after Russia instead, or in addition to the US? :speech:

There has been a smear campaign already against the women who charged Assange with rape. I'd rather let the courts handle that one seeing as Assange seems to be following the rape defendant's playbook to a T. Smear the reputation of the victim and no one will listen to her. The court of public opinion has little or no place there without more evidence than I have seen. Correlation does not equal causation.
I've caught wind of some displeasure among Assange,s colleagues regarding the nature of some of the info released so I'm not terribly surprised some folks are keeping their distance.
Yellowcake in Iraq? Colour me surprised. That should have been the first thing this twerp released, but I guess making the US look bad was more important. My question is what underlying cause was behind the UK and the US keeping their mouths shut about this. The source of that materiel needs further investigation. Somehow I think it may not have been some third world backwater.
If Assange had gone after Russia, he would be at the bottom of some body of water with heavy objects tied to his legs. Full stop. Part of the reason he is being "so brave" as to stand up to the big bad US is because he knows the big bad US will not put a bullet in his head. He is too public, Hell Putin is probably thinking of offing him to keep his own skeletons in his closet and framing the US. If I was a despotic former member of the KGB it would have crossed my mind multiple times.
