Paladins and Special Mounts (3.5)
Paladins and Special Mounts (3.5)
Hello World!
Does anyone know of any ways to get a kickass mount in 3.5?
I know that there are several feats that will allow my character to be more awsome while seated in the saddle, but I'm talking about ways to boost the mount itself.
This is ofcourse for creating a character for an upcoming game. I know that some of the other characters will be quite powerful, and so my poor holy knight's mount will find itself dead before I can say "HEAL!" unless I do something.
So far I have managed to increase my effective paladin level by 4 by using the Harmonium Peacekeeper prestige class from Dungeon Magazine 315, and I think I'll be using an Elephant as a mount. I couldn't find how much effective levels that would cost but I'm guessing 5.
I'm also wondering how many times the GM will say no when I try to give the mount the "vow of poverty" feat from "Book of Exalted Deeds".
Anyone else got any legal ways of improving one's mount?

I think he meant to have his horse take the vow of poverty feat in order to gain large sets of bonuses to stats, resistances, and so on and so forth so the paladin didn't have to worry about barding and such.GawainBS wrote:Unless your DM gives out alot less gold and items than the rules suggest (the Wealth by Level table), avoid Vow of Poverty at all costs. Regular items just do the job better.

Listen up maggots, Mr. Popo's 'bout to teach you the pecking order.
It goes you, the dirt, the worms inside of the dirt, Popo's stool, Kami, then Popo.

Ye, I'm reasonably sure that unless he suffers a stroke or smthn he'll refuse Vow of Poverty flat out. Especially since the Elephant mount will get 17 HD for my level 12 character. Giving it Vow of Poverty will make it...insane.
I did add the Celestial Mount feat from Book of Exalted Deeds which gives the celestial template for free (to the mount).
I've looked at the dragon-mounts from the Draconomicon and I think that my celestial elephant will actually be superior. It is an elephant with 17 HD (avg 196 hp), Speed 50', AC 30 (with half-plate barding), Slam +21 and 2xStomp+16 with 2d6+11 and 2d6+5 damage, DR 10/magic, Acid/cold/electricity resist 10, SR 22, Holy Smite +17 damage and Darkvision in addition to mount boons. For my level 12 character xD
The only thing it misses is flying. That would be cool. It's Dumbo
I'm actually thinking about toning it down a bit for the actual game. But I still kinda want to see how far one can get without going full retard (pun-pun and vow of poverty for the mount is well within the full-retard spectrum for my mount-pimping purposes)
After reading the Draconomicon I also seriously wondered if it would be fun to play a Brass dragon wyrmling Paladin Harmonium Peacekeeper flying around on a dragonnel xD
I'm reasonably certain that my DM will allow it too.
PS! here's something I found hilarious as well: Obtain Familiar from Complete Arcane and Dragon Familiar from Draconomicon. Take Obtain Familiar a couple of times if possible to have three-four dragons at your beck and call

Your Paladin simply doesn't qualify for an Elephant. Read the rules about the mount carefully.
All options for alternative Paladin mounts will probably reduce your effective Paladin lvl, much like a Druid's Animal Companion.
About Obtain Familiar: Doesn't work. A feat can only be selected once, unless otherwise mentioned.

It's the prestige class Harmonium Peacekeeper. It gives the ability Special Mount on level 1 and then states that Paladin levels stack with Harmonium Peacekeeper levels for Special Mount purposes. It then gives an example of how this works with a level 5(or smthn) fighter/level 3 paladin/level 1 HP where the total Special Mount level then is 8. Five for level 1 HP and three for level 3 paladin. A level 11 paladin level 1 HP is then an effective level 16 paladin for HP special mount purposes.
As a level 12 paladin I would still be able to take the elephant as a Special Mount, but with a five reduction in levels it would only get the most basic Mount boons and end up with 13 HD; still 1 more than normal but it is too big to be in a dungeon crawl and sorta sticks out so it balances out...sorta.
It's a good mount for CR 7.
It is also, I would say, the best mount choice for a level 16 paladin. Remember, that's the power level this should be compaired to. The guy riding the Elephant mount should be meeting wizards with Otto's Irresistable Dance and druids with Reverse Gravity, so having a heavy hitting meatbag with lots of hp doesn't help that much since he has little in the way of special defenses.
22 SR is very good at level 12, but it's less good at level 16 when everyone punches through SR like you were protected by armor made from newspapers, and a DR of 10/magic will largely only be useful for RP-purposes already at level 12.
