My group will soon be doing a level 10 campaign in which we can start out with three magic items in addittion to all the gold- a level 9, item, level 10, and level 11.
However we are all compleely stumped by how to work it out. Sometimes it wil tell you the item level in the book, but often it's just the required caster level to make it, or it will say its +1, +2, etc. I know these are indicative of the prices of having an equivilant bonus on the item, but how does this tell us what level it is?
It's all got very confusing. Money is also not a concern for these three items, we get them in addition to the gold.
Lastly, anyone have any reccomendations for a level 9 item? The character is a level 7 Favoured Soul/Level 3 Ashworm Dragoon.
Working out the level of magic items (3.5)
The required caster level is a pretty good indication of what the item's level is.
The +1/+2 have also caster levels listed. It's the minimum CL required to cast a Greater Magic Weapon/Magic Vestment of that bonus.
DMG also has loot tables, and Magic Item Compendium has more expansive ones. They're also good guides.
I take it the character is melee? Either go for a +1 Transmuting weapon (Although I think it's slightly too high lvl), or for Belt of STR +2/+4, followed by CON +2/+4 item, and finally a CHA (for more spells) +2/+4 item.
Don't bother with higher than +1 weapons or armour, since you get Greater Magic Weapon & Magic Vestment (which last hours/lvl and are free), or item of Resistance +X, since you got 24 hours spells for that. (Greater Resistance.)
Ring of Deflection or Amulet of Natural Armour are also good choices. (+2 I guess on lvl 9.)

Thanks man, I actually did decide to go with a +2 ring of deflection. The rules are different now though, its just 48,000 gold to spend on items with no free ones- people had found some crazy stuff, got a bit unbalanced. Now i just can't decide whether to spend it all or save some for in-game.
Yeah it's a very melle character. I had found a bunch of str and cha increasing items, but what I'd really like as well is something to give my ashworm higher intelleligence or just something that could let it learn more tricks. Anyone know of anything?
