Randomly upgraded items in game. Normal?

I have noticed that sometimes my inventory itmes upgrade themselves in my stash in both Origins (Wardens Keep), and Awakening. I have actually used this little glitch as a tactic for my gear later in the game. When I transfer Origins items over to Awakening they then become tier 8, and 9 sometimes. I have the console version by the way. Can someone reply and tell me if this is a normal thing.
Some items that I have that have upgraded:
Bloodline Axe= Volcanic
Duncan's Dagger, and Duncan's Sword= White Steel, and Dragonbone
All of Cailin's Armour= Dragonbone

These items were all lower tiers when I found them
