Curses, defenders and damage, oh my!

Post by QuenGalad »

Hi all :)

I've reinstalled DSII recently (was feeling down and wanted to slaughter something) and noticed some strange and interesting things.

Since this is not my first playthrough, I've been doing things differently than before - mixing classes, training npc's in different classes and so on. It's been really fun, but:

1. The monsters seem to home in on the curse caster immediately. Always. I use Drown, which is my favourite, but every time a character casts it, all the enemies rush at them, with faster movement rate than usual (like when they are angry). Why?

2. The "Overbear" skill says it gives a bonus to two-handed weapon damage. "Barricade" says it gives a bonus to shield armour. When I pick up a shield, the character without points in barricade "sees" it has, say, 30 armour, and one with barricade sees 45. But nothing like that happens for Overbear, the damage stats stay the same. Shouldn't they change too?

3. How does "Defend" party order work? I found it in controls list, but when I try to use it, they behave strangely. I thought it would be like "Wait", but instead of them just standing there they would attack monsters who come into range. But they don't, they do a strange mix of "Wait" and "Mirror". Anyone knows how it's supposed to work?

Hi

My DS memories are distant and poor, but i shall try to answer some of your questions.

1. I cannot remember if DS had any aggro system, but if it had, mages would be on top of it until you get proper tanks. Mages that cast drown would be the cherry on top.

3. They attack only the monsters that engage your party members, not ones that come close. So in theory a mob can chill out next to your party, and "defend" order will ignore it.

Ok, so it's like this:
I've got Finala turned into a dual-wielding melee fighter ('cos she's a near-psychopath who likes being soaked in blood, y'know :D ), but she's got enough combat magic skill to cast Drown. So she does, and always the monsters target her. So I suppose it's as simple as that? Curse=aggro?

The defend mode does act like you said. I paid closer attention and that's how it works, thanks. :)

Anyone know about two-handed damage bonus from Overbear? Does it even exist?

1.) In DS2 the amount of damage events is the decisive factor whether or not monsters change their target preference, the damage type has some influence too but the damage amount itself doesn't matter (besides of monster-specific anger prepositions).
That's why curses with damage over time have a strong provoking effect. Similar things you may observe with the (thrown) bleeding effect and sometimes because of shockwaves or ignition too.
So the original aggro implementation is a bit doubtable, and unfortunately also spells with AoE suffer this too.

2.) As far as i remember, there never was a bug with 'Overbear'. But since you mentioned 'Barricade'...
A stats bonus by 'Barricade' is directly applied on the shield/item - which is an exception. Usually damage increasing skills don't change the stats of the item they rely to, these skills only will be accounted for the stats displayed in the character interface (depending on our current weapon selection).
Totally modded.

Ooh...
That explains a lot. Including the reason why the monsters have been ignoring Taar, more or less, but got down on her like a ton of bricks when she started using "Ripple". And yes, I noticed this with the "Bleed" effect too, but thought I was imagining things :D

Thank you!

After you finish dungeon siege 2 you're hereby sentenced to write a review of it. No, you cannot trade it for death row.

Love & regards.
