Cool glitch
I did this on the 360 with the latest patch, not sure if it works on PC or PS3. Just as you start down the hill into Crescent Canyon West, you can walk up the rocks on the south side of the canyon. Go south and you can get completely out of the map. There aren't any plants or animals, so it's a safe way to access areas near the edge of the map without encountering hostile creatures, although there are some invisible walls that prevent you from getting back onto the map in certain places (like above the Deathclaw promontory, and along the road that leads from the dam to the Legate's camp). The landscape is only rendered with generic textures and once you're off the Pip-Boy map it can be disorienting. Fortunately, there aren't any invisible walls on the hills, so it's easy to stick to the high ground to keep your bearings. Far to the southeast the river ends, and you can go around it and back up the east side of the map and gain access to the Fort before you are invited by Caesar. If you keep going south, you eventually come to a cliff edge beneath which is water. Jump off and keep swimming south and the "plateau" on which the entire Mojave wasteland sits never dips below the horizon (believers in the flat-Earth conspiracy should be happy). Take plenty of RadAway, because the water is radioactive. I didn't swim all the way around the plateau, but from two sides it looks like it's a giant square, maybe two or three times the size of the area you can see on your Pip-Boy map. I don't know if the "ocean" ever ends either, because I ran out of patience before I ran out of water.
Can the answer to this question be "No"?
