Why is Gothic 1 and 2 not among the games here?

Post by Randomer10 »

I have noticed that these two games are lacking in the general info about each game, where I think it is strange since these games far excell the Elder scrolls games.

The Elders scrolls had great graphics and architecture but its like the people in world lacked a soul (rather uninspired dialogue). However in the first two Gothic games then they may have lacked a good combat controls and had a rather simplistic dialogue options, but the world in whole did feel much more atmospheric and alive, along with that how the main quests and locations were very interesting.

I think Gothic 1 is better than 2 because it was more balanced in whole, while the second game might have surpassed it if the later chapters were not so combat oriented (too much hack and slash when fighting these dragons and its territory).

Wow.. You're the first person who admits to know gothic games!

I even reviewed both (here) , but still no one on GB seemed to even remotely care (except Tricky.. strange). Then again, noone on GB cares about anything :D

And yes. Gothic 1 is much better than the second one. G1 was amazing, G2 was mediocre. The biggest crime of G2 was the obvious plot. The fully revealed plot.

G3 is both amazing and terrible. It's the buggiest game since Daggerfall, but it's so open..

To answer your question : I don't think Gothic are as popular as the other series. German's don't throw out milions to promote the game worldwide. Thus Gothic series, The Guild series, and many, many more great games are overshadowed by others.

I could probably write a Gothic 1 and 2 walkthrough, so that Buck can finally add them.. But i did that already for a Polish site, and it took all my patience.

I've mentioned Gothic and Risen in pretty much every single thread about best RPGs and what to play.
The problem is that the people with the most ridiculous ideas are always the people who are most certain of them.

Did you also play the Night of the Raven expansion for G2? For it did include a new map with a lot of interesting quests (it was accessed through some underground portal).

Although the main quest of Gothic 2 may have been rather uninspired then I think the gameaplay was still very good overall with all the others quests included. My most memorable location in all Gothic games was in the second game where you had to swim in the lake to be unnoticed by the orcs whom were besieging the castle in the prison-colony area, and you had to outrun them to get inside.

Gothic 3 was a good game, although all the town quests became rather repetitive with the time. But it was very enjoyable in travelling through the landscape in Nordmar and the desert. At first days the game always crashed every half an hour or so, but when I went to the dxdiag and put the sound options to basic then it did solve the problem long before all these community patches.

Risen had a great first chapter, but it seems that the Piranha bytes have lost their touch after Gothic 3, just like Bioware has done after the success of KOTOR.

Really wish we had Troika back.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe there used to be a Gothic subforum. If I remember well, it was merged in the General RPG discussion because it was not crowded enough.
Dr. Stein grows funny creatures, lets them run into the night.
They become GameBanshee members, and their time is right.

I believe it's true, but what happened to Gothic 1 and 2 pages with walkthrough?

We cover as much as we can with the resources we have. Sometimes we have trouble even providing subsites for the popular AAA titles, and that means that other games, like the Gothic series, don't always make the cut. If you think you have what it takes to write a walkthrough with annotated maps, then you should send a PM to BuckGB, the site administrator.

*raises hand* I know (and enjoy) Gothic!

I think back in the day (RPGDot.com comes to mind, sadly now dead) the European RPG fan sites handled a lot of the Gothic coverage. Indeed, there was something of a split in opinion/communities (only from my perspective I must add) between those that thought Gothic was the greatest modern cRPG (tended to be central European gamers, as Gothic was made by a German developer and the game was marketed and pushed far more in continental Europe - atleast I assume so) and those that held Baldur's Gate I/II as the creme de la creme (more, but not exclusively, your North American/general English speaking gamers).

I remember getting directed from Baldur's Gate Dungeon forums to Gamebanshee for BG2 walkthrough purposes, and to RPGDot for Gothic in another thread :D

I also agree that Gothic games are good RPGs, one of my favourite series, in fact.

And I also agree that Gothic 1 was better than Gothic 2 NotR story-wise, though the game had felt somehow less "optimized" than the 2nd part, as in terms of combat precision, turning the character around etc; felt awkward at times.

As for Gothic 3, well, you should give it a try with Community Patch 1.74. I've done a playthrough very recently and 99%, if not all the bugs had been fixed (only hardly noticeable stuff left). The only thing which I didn't enjoy much (and probably can't be fixed), is that combat system isn't the same as in previous Gothics.
