Weird bug in Watcher's Keep

Post by Kandabros »

Ok, this is my first post here, after (quite shamelessly) having taking a fair share of information from here. So, sorry bout that

As for the topic, here's the situation. I'm on Watcher's Keep level 3, the part with the portals and the maze, etc. After *asking* Aesgareth to hand me the stone and the Deck of Many Things (ahem, killing him for them), I was surprised to find I couldn't get to the next level. Yes, I have the Scepter of Radiance with the 3 gems added to it, but it keeps saying "some force prevents you from going further" (or w/e it says).

Anyone have any idea what could have caused this or how to fix it? I'm guessing some global variable got messed up, cause I also didn't have the option to gamble the scepter with Aesgareth.

I play with only the official patch (don't like mods or people fixing things that aren't broken) and some very item-specific fixes.

Thanks in advance for any answer.

now im not 100% sure this is the solution to your issue, since i always killed this "mob", but did you kill the "wraith" just before going down to gambling place, or did you flee?

Yes, I killed everything in the maze, and got all parts for the Scepter of Radiance.
I even went back to Heal Yakman to maybe see if that fixed it but no dice.
Thanks for answering

EDIT: Anyone know the area code for Watcher's Keep lvl 4? The one with the Machine of Lum the Mad?

EDIT2: Finally! The problem was that I had put the Vigil Stone and the Ritual Scroll those guys give you at the entrance into a Bag of Holding. I figured it out after I tried to get out of WK and got the same message.

That's still a bug probably, I don't think putting quest items in my Bag of Holding has even prevented me from finishing quests (or letting Cespenar do his job, for instance), but glad to hear everything worked out for you!

I went through the list of "fixes" and only found silly things (fixing typos, correcting things that - supposedly - aren't working "as intended").
I didn't find ANY mention to the Bag of Holding nor other containers. So that "fix"pack (more like, result of many people having too much spare time) will not fix what I just said (or at least, doesn't say so in the list of changes).
You can search for yourself if you like.

You'd be surprised at what strings exactly can go wrong. Fixpack increases stability of the scripts (by sorting them better than vanilla version), which reduces the amount of possible errors, and increases the time after which the game becomes corrupted.

Let's be honest for a second here, BG2 always buggs out after some point.

The game is perfectly playable without those things. I just needed to take the item out from the damned bag. And your oh so holy fixpack doesn't fix my problem, so if you want to advertise about it, do it somewhere else.

Who gave the guys making those fixes the right to say how the game should work? If they know so much, they should be making their own games and respect the work of others.

And I've been through BG2 an endless amount of times, including Watcher's Keep, and NOT ONCE did it "bug out". This was just the first time I put that particular item in a bag, and it was fixed quite easily.
Honestly, it also makes sense from a roleplaying point of view. I mean, the items you put in a bag of holding are taken to another space, so it wasn't exactly "on" my characters.

Yes, that makes perfect sense.

I wasn't advertising anything, just giving an advice. Sure the game is playable without the fixes, but in my opinion (and i'm not the only one) it runs smoother with the unofficial patch. Global variables screw up less often.

You don't want it? Sure, no problem. Just wanted to make sure that you know that such a thing exists, and confirm that it works more often than not.

No trolling intended, although your reaction was pretty surprising, and felt a bit hostile.

Kind regards, and kick Demogorgons butt ;)

Nice to see you can be reasonable and not just a random troll.
And I was aware that such a thing exists, as I said in my first post, I don't like people fixing things that aren't broken. You're entitled to your own opinion, as well as any who plays with those fixes.
It wasn't my intention to sound hostile, and definitely didn't want this to escalate as it did. So, my apologies.

PS: Demogorgon told me to say his butt hurt badly when he fell down to the Abyss ;)
