Game crashes in Ashbury - help needed

Post by Majorman »

So, this happens two times in a row. I have started a new game lately (necromancer, half-elf, "sold your soul" story) and things ran smoothly until I went to Ashbury (to get Geoffrey and the dog). I then ran on Geoffrey's quest with him in my group, I completed it, gave him the gem and then as soon as I leave the catacombs the game crashes: it is not immediately apparent, but as soon as I save (savegame is made successfully), I cannot load the savegame successfully. It's hard to explain, the game loads, but keeps showing the "are you sure you want to quit?" textbox every so often. It's annoying at first, but if the message shows on the worldmap, I'm thrown out of the game.

In the end I deleted my corrupted savegame file (it was unplayable) and started anew since I had no backup saves. I created the exact same character, ledt for Asbury at level 12 and my last savegame is corrupted in the same way. This tme around I have several backups and I am certain that the problem orriginates in Ashburry. I have a savegame in the catacombs made just after I handed Geoffrey the gem (he's in my party) and it works fine, but as soon as I leave the catacombs I can no longer make a proper savegame.

I have installed both the official and the unofficial patches, the widescreen mode and I am currently running the game on Win XP.

Any help would be appreciated.

As first i recommend a clean re-install with full reg wipe.
Perhaps you made a mistake during installation and messed up the order? Perhaps there are conflicts? Perhaps a file has copied incorrectly.

If the problem will persist, what i'd do is check your running processes. This may be caused by some third party software (both legit or virus)

Sounds ridiculous? You'd be surprised.

I've never bothered having GTA in my partyb except for once, but I thought he was only supposed to join you after you completed the quest. I was under the impression you have to give him the gem where he waits outside the gates.

I my impression was correct, then that would maybe explain the crash.

It seems that Geoffrey's responsible for my troubles. Even though IGN's walkthrough says it's possible to get him to join before completing his own quest, this somehows screws the gamescript in my case. So, if anyone faces the same problem, solution seems to be:
1) Don't let Geoffrey join your paty or play the good guy. Geoffrey won't offer to join you.
2) If you can't make it without Geoffrey, at least have him join after you finish his quest and save often .Then make a backup save just in case.
