4 or 6 Characters?

Post by trebze »

Hello, today I have a small strategy question. I have always played with 4 players, and have often (and specially against lone powerful monsters such as Sarevok, or demons) had a very hard time killing them. Should I or not, use 6 characters, knowing that? I usually play wiht a fighter, a priest, a mage, a thief.

As long as you don't reach the XP Cap it's easier with a smaller party since you level faster.

In Shadows of Amn, you will come across many powerful items. The smaller the party, the better equipped it is, as you don't have to spread those items around (of course, a six-character party can be made well, too). Add to this the fact that they level up faster, like kmonster said, and a four or even three-people party can be quite deadly. However, some of this deadliness comes from the fact that as players, we are on our n-th playthrough and know exactly what to expect. For the first couple of times, I'd say four is a minimum, both for tactical versatility and banter, for the first three runs or so.

Currently I'm nearing the end of ToB with a party that has progressively grown to five, but started with just two of us, a cleric/thief PC and Anomen. Was hard sometimes but it actually worked. Lot of fun.

Well thanks very much, I will therefore continue in my 4-group. Good day to you, gentlemen.

Well, I'm pretty sure I am a female. So if one kmonster counts as "gentlemen", then one quengalad counts as ladies. Especially since she weighs 73 kg :D

Mage problem..

Hi there. This is my first message here, in GameBanshee. So, I have only one question:

- Is it bad or good to have at least three mages in one party, in BGII Shadows of Amn? I have Aerie, Edwin and Imoen right now in my party with me(Monk) Minsc and Valygar. So please, if anyone can answer this question, please reply. :D

You'll have a problem with scrolls. There aren't enough for all your mages to learn spells (especially if you fail some spell writing)

You could work around it, by spreading out unique scrolls and in general giving them different tasks.

3 mages in the party are no problem, I even had 4. There are many spells with 3 or more scrolls, but thinking about how to spread the scrolls wisely won't hurt.

Concur with Kmonster. My current party in ToB has 4 mages and all of them can cast 9th level spells.
My PC is an elven fighter/mage
Aerie cleric/mage
Nalia
Imoen

There have been more than enough scrolls for them to have almost every available spell from level 1 to level 8. My PC has an INT of 19 and used Potions of Genius for the others to learn the spells over their normal limit. There are just a couple of spells missing here or there for those levels. Many level 9 spells are available in mass quantity, but there are a few that I believe have only two or three copies available. For example, IIRC, Wish (full version) has but 3 copies in ToB only. I believe that there are only 2 copies of the various Bigby spells (which are differing levels) also only in ToB. But I spread them out well amongst the four of them, (also saved a copy of some for my similicrums to use) so each is a very potent spellcaster in their right.

I would agree to a certain extent. certainly it is easier at the start to have a smaller party, but when the experience cap is reached, or perhaps even a bit earlier you can then increase the number to six as the new members will have similar experience to your main character (Particularly so if you have Level 1 NPCs installed).
