What do you guys think of the MMO?
What do you guys think of it?
I think, it looks good, I admit that, I mean the trailers looked awesome, there was no gameplay in it however.
But I was really hoping for KotOR III, or atleast Battlefront III or maybe Republic Commando II.
But no, we get... a MMO.
I like MMO's, but not that much cuz of all the compition, I dont like that. KotOR with no mulitplayer was fine by me, RPG ftw!
Anyways, notice that its: Star Wars: The OLD REPUBLIC, not the the knights of.
Maybe that is a clue that after this MMO they will finally make a KotOR III(and hoping its better then KotOR II)
Oh yeah and I'm new. Great site btw.
The KotOR walkthrough and all helped me alot.

I think the reason Bioware are naming it such is because players will be able to play the game on both sides of the coin, i.e. as the republic and the sith. In the previous 2 rpgs, you always were on the side of the republic, hence the jedi knight title.BulletProof wrote:Anyways, notice that its: Star Wars: The OLD REPUBLIC, not the the knights of.
Im not a big fan of MMOs, and have really low hopes for a K3 to tell the truth.

Sorry, it's an MMO so that's an automatic disqualification from consideration for me. Even IF I was a MMO player, I'd have doubts about a game where the trailer took a huge chunk of the costs of developing the game itself.
I'd rather be part bull than a complete sheep.

I think it looks promising and have been following the game progress for the last - well 8 months or so.
I've long been arguing for a larger fusion between single player mechanics into MMO, and now it looks like Bioware have listened to me.
The game looks promising indeed.
But they'll not make KOTOR3 for quite some time after this game, you can be pretty sure about that. They've said it'll be the "KOTOR3, 4, 5 ...12" or something like that to indicate it.
Also - seeing as this post is about SW:TOR I'm moving it to the proper forum. It doesn't belong in the KOTOR forum as it is not a discussion about KOTOR.

I hadn't realised that K1 and K2 had lost money, obviously they must have otherwise they would have made a K3 and not abandoned the series. Shame as I enjoyed both games, and will definitely not be buying a Multiple Morons Online game.
Seems like they listened to folk like Xandax and ignored the rest of their paying customers. I really hope this dies a quick death, but I suspect the fanboys will keep it going for a while.
Just the the sort of crap I expected after Bioware got bought out sadly, it's now just another EA off shoot, gone are the days when it brought out good to great games. Just another bunch of corporate suits now.

I think that statement risks you the ire of fans of old Bioware games such as BG. While they are still a good dev team imho, it is beyond doubt that they seem to be neglecting some of the quality of old for media hype and sales figures.Li85 wrote:i think itll be the best bioware game yet.

It's not even the same company, which makes the comment about "Bioware's best yet" all the more curious. The small group of Canadian physicians who formed Bioware, because they enjoyed playing tabletop D&D on those cold Alberta nights when nothing else was doing, have long gone. What was then called Bioware afterwards was a part of the game industry, making games that fit a certain mold, without much character. And even that's gone, now, since Bioware was purchased a short while back by EA.Loki[D.d.G] wrote:I think that statement risks you the ire of fans of old Bioware games such as BG. To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.
Will it be a good MMO? Probably. Will it be a great MMO? Possibly. Will it be as good as a KotOR III could have been? Not on your life.

Discovering that the next in the Kotor series was going to be a mmo broke my heart. I just don't have that type of money to play the game, so that means ill be looking at a game I will want to play more than any other, and have no way of legally playing it...ouch.
But it may still be wicked sick me thinks

I entirely agree with galraen, and hope that this game meets the same end as Galaxies, but faster. This drive for MMOs on the market is ridiculous, as is the seeming need of companies to do it more and more, only to result in more and more failures. I don't usually wish bad stuff for Bioware but this was a blow to single player RPG action and totally segregates out the market of folks who are interested in canon but not interesting in listening to the "Army of Gondor" speaking in leetspeak publicly reducing the game to the same sort of discussion in other MMOs.
Warhammer Online and Hellgate come to mind as two games which single-player gameplay which, completely fell on their faces online. I'm hoping that people begin looking at the MMO franchise and wondering if it's worth going into?
Personally, I'm not at all impressed with LucasArts. I think the only reason they are still afloat is because of their controls over some franchises. Otherwise, they seem intent to screw up concepts and games like Gladius or Battlefront II in favour of actually creating something worth while.

I would've loved a KotOR3 but I just can't work up any interest for ToR anymore
firstly, I dislike that my different Revan's have all been 'cannonised' into a male light side Revan who romanced Bastilla. what about my female Revans? my sith Revans? the Revans who didn't romance anyone or who romanced Carth or the cat girl? KotOR2 at least took most of those choices into account, while not using imported saves it instead had some dialogue checks to set the proper flag
but now all our Revans mean nothing and we'll never get to finish their story. instead we get their Revan
yes, I know the reasons why. one part Lucas Thou Must Be Cannon but mostly because in an mmo you just can't take into account everybody's different Revans
then there's the fact that the gameplay looks very much like a single player game that just happens to have other players walking around. so... the worst of both worlds? an mmo's subscription fee to play a single player game? I'll pass, thanks
I would've loved KotOR3 and I don't think I'll ever be able to forgive ToR for being the final nail in the coffin confirming that it will never happen

I don't care, I'm still free. You can't take the sky from me
Kotor series and their MMO are not like Warcraft series and WoW. WoW depleted the saga. The entire world covered etc.
with TOR They can go back to the past, they can pick another galaxy, they can... The fact that they will NOT is a different matter.
With this being said i'm not even remotely interested in the MMO, and everyone who is - be warned. While WoW first years were golden, all other MMO's started out as bugged, unfinished piles of monkey manure, that was slowly shaped into an mmo with a few dozen patches.
Even bigger warning : Some that turned out very nicely, were destroyed by corp. greed (Warhammer : Age of Reckoning & EA)
Wait and see which way TOR goes. If you're interested in it - try it. If you're not - don't. If you know nothing about the game - your opinion on it does not matter, as it is invalid.
Keep in mind, prejudgement and assumption-based opinions should be reserved for idiots only.

I for one do not miss one-click-win RPG series that were KoToR and surely hope that such combat system will never return.Mist the days where you press a button on your remote and Revan starts cutting down a legion of enemies.

I didn't encounter bugs in Guildwars, none that I can remember anyways. Had pretty good combat, sometimes challenging, a choice between cooperative and solo as well as a choice to PvP, which includes casual formats. But it just had too many class-combinations too keep under control. Too bad, as builds were part of the fun.
I hope is that the cooperative parts of SW:TOR will lean more towards Guildwars' and doesn't turn into yet another variation of the all too common Holy Trinity.
And off course, the fixed, one time payment of GW was golden, at least for the players.

Well - right now I think its possible this game could be fun, but there are many factors of uncertainty.
I've seen a lot of way trashy rulesystems recently. Dragon Age was one big example for that. Mages are kind of okay-ish, but Warrior and Rogue had very little options. Seriously, I enjoyed the trivialistic rulesystems of Knights of the Old Republic and Vampire: Bloodlines more than what DA has to offer, and now thats a truely bad sign.
But is is a MMO. In theory, a game you are supposed to play and enjoy for years. But a bad rulesystem will make this impossible. And DA has, to me, proved that Bioware isnt so brilliant with selfmade rulesystems.
Looking at the SW:TOR rulesystem and what devs say about it, the uncertainly only increases. They say they're looking for "fast paced combat". How should I put this ? Just ugh. If I would want to play shooters, I would do so. So yes, the last thing I would be looking for is "fast". I rather want "complex" and "detailed". Something like the combat system in Vanguard which its great depth.
Aside from that, graphics look okay to me, and story should be fine (its Bioware, after all). What remains ? The big issue shortcutted to "EA". I would be really massively surprised if they dont introduce microtransactions and stuff into SW:TOR pretty quick, to maximize the profit, no matter how great the profit is in the first place.
And then there is Lucas Arts. They managed to kill SWG with their NGE, so who can guarantee they wont finish off SW:TOR as well ? Though both these parties are hopefully likely to not screw up the game if its successful enough, which seems quite possible - not everyone has an approach to MMOs like I have, looking for the great one to play for years, instead of looking for the new one every few months or so.
And no, SW:TOR is DEFINITELY NOT KotOR3, SWG2 or WoW2. I dont even know Battlefront or Republic Commando, that sounds like shooters (which I religiously avoid).

The first games that showed how EA has screwed up Bioware are Dragon Age 2 and Mass Effect 2. Those are true moneymaker games - low quality and fast publication.
Err ... I'm sorry ? BG2 was an extreme financial success.Loki[D.d.G] wrote:I think that statement risks you the ire of fans of old Bioware games such as BG. Err.
I am quite baffled at the hostility in this thread against MMOs.
Personally I think MMOs are kind of the ideal game. Its the one type of game I can actually happily play for years without getting bored. No singleplayer game ever did this to me, they all grow stale and repetitive after two months.
Of course for this to be actually the case, the game has to have a certain quality. Thats why I choose the game I want to play very carefully. Vanguard was the first who actually met my criteria well enough. SW:TOR might not hit that close, but one can always hope.
